XERUS'S VOICE ARTIST FOCUS:

Today's V/A focus is that 1983 Disney Christmas classic, Mickey's Christmas Carol, where Mickey and the gang tell the tale of the famous Charles Dickens story. This would be the first time Alan Young would voice Uncle Scrooge and then continue to do so in shows like Ducktales and House of Mouse. And it was Wayne Allwine's first performance as Mickey Mouse and would continue to voice him to this day. Clarence "Ducky" Nash, who was the original voice of Donald Duck, was also a part of this Christmas classic just two years before his passing.

ALAN YOUNG: Scrooge McDuck(Ebenezer Scrooge)
WAYNE ALLWINE: Mickey Mouse(Bob Cratchit), Weasel 1
CLARENCE "DUCKY" NASH: Donald Duck(Nephew Fred)
HAL SMITH: Goofy(Jacob Marley), Ratty(Collector for the Poor 1)
EDDIE CARROLL: Jiminy Cricket(Christmas Past)
WILL RYAN: Mole(Collector for the Poor 2), Willie the Giant(Christmas Present), Pete(Christmas Future), Weasel 2
PATTY PARRIS: Daisy Duck(Isabelle)
DICK BILLINGSLEY: Tiny Tim

Otis did Goofy? I always thought Tony Pope voiced Goofy?

Hal only voiced Goofy that one time before Tony Pope became a voice artist. Tony only voiced Goofy in Soccermania and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

Goofy went through a lot of voice artists. Starting with Pinto Colvig and then George Johnson, Bob Jackman, Hal Smith, Tony Pope, Will Ryan, and Bill Farmer started voicing Goofy in the Prince and the Pauper and Goof Troop and Bill continues to voice the famous Goof to this very day.

You know... It was probably this special, other than the Disney Comics that gave birth to the character of Uncle Scrooge McDuck and helped establish the familial relations for Donald. Tiny Tim, wasn't that either of Mickey's own nephews, Morty or Ferddie? They seem to have fallen into obscurity, Donald's nephews getting the limelight.
BTW: Isn't Minnie as Emily Crachit missing from that list above? Keep up the great work X-Man.

Thank you. Yes, I believe it was either one of Mickey's two nephews who played Tiny Tim. Also, Minnie was Emily Cratchit, but she didn't have any lines in that cartoon, so a voice actress wasn't cast for her.

But certainly, if she did have lines, Alwine's real-life wife, Russi Taylor would've voiced her, just as they've been voicing the staple Disney couple since the 1970's or so.

An odd thing about this special is that this is when Alan young did the voice of Scroogie, and he plays opposite Will Ryan, who played Scrooge McDuck in Soccermainia (giving him a slightly different tone, almost closer to his original portrayals). Alan Young played him in at least most of the other projects. Ducktales and Sing Along songs I know of.

Anyway:

Here's something I always wondered. This always bothered me. In the Donald Duck wartime propaganda cartoon "Spirit of 41" a Scottish duck (the good side of Donald, in the good side bad side cliche) tells Donald to save his money. Now, was that character who Carl Barks loosely based Scrooge McDuck on? Or was it an odd coincidence?

And another thing, what was the first time that Scrooge McDuck was animated?

Well, there was a good character and a bad one. Scrooge himself was the rich duck who cared about his money, but still gave enough of it to charity and who cared deeply for his family, Donald included. But Glumgold, a rival competitor of Scrooge's (for both were trying to become the world's--or at least, Duckburg's--richest duck) only cared about the money for selfish reasons alone. Heck, they even made an 80's film showing the competition between Scrooge and Glumgold called Ducktales: Treasure of the Lost Lamp.

And to consider, Scrooge was actually a lot grouchier in his earliest incarnation. he was actually intentionally mean to Donald. but he softened up in time.

Interresting fact: Glomgold was actually South African. But considering the politcal climate of the 80's in South Africa, Disney decided to play it safe and make him Scottish, just like Scrooge.
