Has anyone actually ever seen 'A Special Sesame Street Christmas'?

I've never seen it. I hear it wasn't that good, but I'd still love to see it.

I wish they had released it as an extra on the DVD of 'Christmas Eve on Sesame Street'.

Tough Pigs gives a detailed description of the obscure special:

Good thing too, because I've never seen it, and unfortunately, the TV Museum doesn't seem to have it.

It was a network TV special that aired on CBS the same year Christmas Eve on Sesame Street debuted. Where as Christmas Eve on Sesame Street became a classic and was played every year (for a while), A Special Sesame Street Christmas never aired again.

It's not supposed to be very good, but I still would love to see it.

I've read that it was actually nominated for an emmy (and lost to Christmas Eve on Sesame Street). If it was worthy of an emmy nomination, then I don't see why it hasn't been rebroadcast (I wonder if a mostly uncut DVD release would be out of the question). I wonder if Sesame Workshop actually owns the rights to this special, or if another company does.

I think I read somewhere that SW doesn't own this, and that's why it has never been re-broadcast or released on home video or DVD. I think it might be owned by CBS.

Okay. They say I haven't posted in several weeks, so I really should respond here.

Yeah. I'd like to see that too. Hopefully, it will be up on You Tube sometime if I can ever get the darn sound working on my computer.

I just sent an e-mail to CBS regarding this. It's a long shot, but it can't hurt.

Now why would CBS own it considering SS has been broadcast on PBS all these years?
I'm sure the SW workshop would have rights to it.

I don't know who owns it for sure. However, the special was produced by and broadcast on CBS. From the TP description, it sounds like the show was never intended for PBS, it was made on the cheap with only a few regular cast members and puppeteers.

So it would make sense that CBS would have gotten the rights. These things often work that way in the business. And it would explain why the SW has never released the special.

Even if it's no owned by Sesame Workshop, that doesn't mean that CBS owns it. Not all original programming on a channel is owned by that channel. For example, I don't think CBS ever owned the distribution rights to any of the Peanuts specials, though untill 2001 they usually premiered on CBS (and CBS used to have the television broadcast rights to three Peanuts specials). PBS doesn't own the rights to Sesame Street even though it is broadcast on that channel. NBC doens't own the rights to Big Bird in China or Sesame Street: 20 and Still Counting.

If anybody here has a copy (and I've seen it listed in some tape-trading websites, so I guess people have it), could that person check the credits to see what company logos are shown after the credits, or if the credits mention a distribution company?

It sounds absolutely dreadful, I don't know why anyone would want to see it, even just to laugh at it...

The only thing I remember about it is that Leslie Uggams and Anne Murray were on it...that's about it.
