I'm not by any means an experienced foam puppet builder, but I know you can get some pretty cool things at sporting good stores in the fly fishing section. Tying flies uses a variety of marabou, ostrich, peacock, and all sorts of other feathers. They also have a product called crystal flash, which is like a fine sparkly tinsel in all different colors. If you need a small amount of feathers, you might find what you are looking for. Try Cabellas website or other fly tying resources. I used to tie flies, so I have a bunch of catalogs somewhere. I could post some links later if anyone is interested.

Yeah, I agree. They are a bit creepy looking. Animal lovers may object to some of the items. I also want to add that a lot of this stuff is also available in the Cabelas brick and mortar locations. Also Gander Mountain stores if there are any in your area. I think a lot of those synthetics would make great puppet hair.

Speaking of eyes: What about any information for oval shaped eyes? Something that can be purchased online? I am needing something about 2 inches tall.

I found these links very helpful (YES YOU, Fozzie!) awhile back, as I made my first soft potrait doll(Rockin' Ralph--Ralph Covert/Ralph's World). I'm Stuffed Fur had the "mongolian lamb" I needed for hair and Beverly was super helpful! I had to make smaller eyes than what most puppets would take, but had a blast creating them, using a clear "animal eye" and painting the back with nail polish.
Another toxic product that might be useful is a nail polish coated pipe cleaner that I bent into glasses.

doggone! I'm trying to get 10 posts, so I can send a private message, and now I also find I'm not yet allowed to post a url so you can see my doll. oh well

I quickly looked through the links and see if this one is listed and didn’t see it.
I recently got some reticulated (Scott) foam from then Dallas Puppet Theater. It was a reasonable price, quick delivery, and a friendly staff to order from.
They also have other puppet related products.
The reticulated foam link is:

So, I'm digging around here: http://www.americanplume.com/index.asp and I'm trying to discover which one of these is the proper product for, say, Animal's hair? Long or short Nondu? http://www.americanplume.com/index.asp

I also found this link at: www.tonyhill.net
Nondu feathers: http://www.tonyhill.net/productCat96521.ctlg

Or have I totally missed the boat?
Feather hair is pretty tricky stuff. I've only made one puppet using it, but, boy! Did it look good! (at the time, I had to dye all my own feathers. What a pain!) I also used full feathers, they weren't trimmed or anything, so it didn't look like typical Muppet feather hair.

I would suggest using the Trimmed Ostrich ("nondu") from www.tonyhill.net . I think that might work best for something like Animal's hair... maybe. I actually don't know, it just seems like that would be the one to try.

Quick question...

What about this? They call it open cell super soft foam. Has anyone used it? Is it any good?

I hate to sound cheap or anything, but... I really can't afford half the stuff being pointed out for carving foam. This is the least expensive I've found, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me whether or not it'll actually work.

Other options include:
http://www.usafoam.com/opencellfoam/poly.html
http://www.usafoam.com/opencellfoam/LUX-R.html

There are a few other less expensive options. Any thoughts?
