Comedy Central cranks up "Yankers"
Tue Jul 2, 6:06 AM ET

By Melissa Grego

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Comedy Central has ordered 20 additional episodes of "Crank Yankers," after airing just five installments of the primetime series.

The 10-episode first season of "Crank Yankers," in which actual crank calls form the basis for a storyline about a twisted town inhabited solely by puppets, debuted June 2. Its ratings have consistently built upon its lead-in.

"We're really pleased so far, and the show has got a lot of potential," Comedy Central executive VP-general manager Bill Hilary told Daily Variety. "Why wait around to order?"

"Crank Yankers" has drawn an average 1.2 million viewers during its first four Sunday night airings, with adults 18-49 repping 70% of its audience. The episodes have been premiering at 10:30 on Sundays after repeats of "The Man Show." Its repeats, however, which follow ratings stalwart "South Park" on Wednesdays, have posted even higher numbers than the Sunday premieres, albeit lower than "South Park's" figures.

"Loveline" co-host Adam Carolla created and executive produces the show with his partners in Jackhole Industries, Daniel Kellison and Jimmy Kimmel.

The new episodes will debut "as soon as we can get them," Hilary said, likely early next year.

I've found some of it kinda distasteful or "not my cup of tea" (even though I hate tea with a passion), but I also find some of it to be really funny!

Ironically enough, I think the funniest parts of the show are the skits that DON'T involve crank calling, like those Confutios Says bits.

I liked the segment "When Puppets Explode". I'm sure Jim Henson would have liked it too.

DON'T WATCH CRANK YANKERS MUPPET FANS !

THEY MADE A BAD STUPID SPOOF ON BIG BIRD WITH MONSTER EYES AND TEETH AND MAKING HIM SMOKE & CUSS. And Paste the spoof face of Big bird on Fried Chicken cups on the show. I Was Angry At The Show ever since.

I agree somewhat wiht this, I mean some of it can be funny, then other parts are wrong. Like anything involving naked puppets is just wrong....

There are times when I can not laugh at a whole episode and times when I crack-up. There are some un-original un-funny attempts at laughs, while others are hilarious. This is the kind of show that old (and young), yuppie, religious nuts don't like, but those are the same kind of people that said rock and roll is the music of the devil. Overall the puppetry and look of the show is great.

I Heard That The Show Didn't Just Made Fun Of Big Bird, But Kermit Too. I heard That There was a episode when they had a spoof on Kermit & Big Bird Together cussing & Fighting.

I know Making fun Of Big Bird Is just bad enough, BUT MAKING FUN ON JIM'S GREATEST CREATION OF ALL TIME KERMIT THE FROG, THEY JUST WENT TOOOOOOOOOOOO! FAR!

Well My Opinion On The Show "Crank Yankers" Is That It Is Dumb.
It's Comedians making crank calls to people then recording it and playing it back by using Muppet type puppets to make it look like the puppets did it.

One Of My Questions About the show is, How did they get away with those Woman puppets Uncensored ?

It maybe Fun, But It's Bad !

You Know, It's Stupid When People Make Fun Of The Muppets, I mean they don't really watch them closely like.....

Person : Ha Ha Ha Seeing Muppets Smoking Is Funny Because They will never do that .

Fact: Harry On Sam & Friends Smoked on a skit called "Poison To Poison"

Or

Person : Ha Ha Ha, That's Just Too Funny, Muppets getting Drunk !

Fact: King Ploobis Got Drunk & Made Scred Drink On SNL.

And I'm Not trying to complain or Judging this show but (SOME) People just think that If a Muppet did this it would be funny without that person seeing that The Muppets Already have Done That.

And I think The people who makes those jokes really points to The Sesame Street Muppets on those Spoofs & Jokes.

Yeah, what these shows are doing are positioning themselves as "anti-Muppet". They are lampooning the audience's perception of the Muppets, not necessarily the Muppets themselves.

And the thing is, this all was done years ago by Peter Jackson's Meet The Feebles. All these other shows (Crank Yankers, Greg The Bunny, Puppets Who Kill, etc.) are just playing different angles of that basic premise.

Feebles worked because it wasn't just puppets behaving badly, it was puppets maiming, killing, sleeping around and doing other disgusting things I won't mention here. It was supposed to lampoon the Muppets and it was played to the hilt. It really works as satire, if you can make it through the movie without heaving.

It was a shame about Greg The Bunny, because I liked the characters (the puppets, Eugene Levy and Seth Green anyways) and they had a few neat ideas but the stories sucked. If Fox had supported it more it might have gone somewhere.

Now Crank Yankers isn't my cup of tea (BTW, there's a cover story in the current issue of Mass Appeal Magazine (http://www.massappealmag.com/) on Crank Yankers) but it serves an audience in it's own, "Jerky Boys" kinda way. It's not ment to appeal to most Muppet fans. If it's good and funny it'll be around awhile. If it's just a novelty show it'll be gone soon.

Then again, we still have America's Funniest Home Videos with us......

I love Pets! I've never seen a full episode though....just clips on the web.

BTW, there's a great Kevin Smith-ish movie on the web called "Sam" (http://www.ufo-pictures.com/samimages.html). Anyone else seen it?
