I couldn't stop throwin' up and havin' the stuff "down south" in intervals of 15 or 20 minutes, so I drove muhself and stayed overnight (they put an IV in me and it stopped, just took a few days to get back to muh old self---oh yeah, and I threw up in a trash can in front of the nurse gettin' information from me before they took me to a room, and that was SO embarrassin'... :o )

Wow... I'm most shocked that no one has any tatoos. It's seems like such a common thing, anywho...

SO! Keep your windows up, doors locked, and music to a minimum, DON'T stop at red-lights by the sidewalks if there are several poles and trash-cans and newspaper boxes there. Dude was in the middle of all that is why I didn't see him, plus I had the Blues Bros blaring and my windows were half-down. I'll put MY window down now, but none of the others, and the doors lock automatically so I'm good there.

Not for postmen. The steering wheel is on the passenger side of the vehicles, but they do drive on the right side of the road.

Yeah, we get a few vehicles designed like that, too. Driving position for the majority of UK locomotives is also on the left, due to the signals being on the left side of the track.

Something I've always been curious about: the (admittedly few) American cars I've been in all seem to have the gearshift on the steering column - is this, like, the 'standard' position for it or have I just been in the wrong sorts of car? :)

Depends on the car you're in. Most have it there in older models for automatic vehicles, some in modern vehicles have them there as well, but my car (for example) is an automatic but has the gear shift situated between the seats. My friend's truck has the shift for his automatic vehicle on the steering wheel shaft.

I guess for some to shift gears they just get the shaft, huh?

I know exactly what I'm doing and where I'm going. There's a world of difference between not needing to think, and not bothering! My driving technique works well, and gives me more time to yell at the idiots you describe. :) To be fair, were I to drive in your home town, I'd not know where I was going, but that's only 'cos I've neither been there nor seen a map...I wouldn't be driving like I didn't know where I was going, though! :)

But there's more to driving in a foreign country than just knowing which side of the car the controls are...India's pretty scary for all that they drive on the left (mostly), and Indonesia has to be seen to be believed!

As for driving my car, well, I'd have to check my insurance...not sure whether they specifically mention bears... ;)

You can lower your premiums by going with the least amount of liability necessary for your laws, limit the coverages (do you need collision and comprehensive, or medical payments if you have a hospitalization insurance somewhere?). It was a great idea to have your dad added on your insurance which we do in our office a lot to decrease the premiums of customers' insurance, that and if they don't have their own prior insurance, and they drive for a business, I'll use that business insurance as prior to give them that discount.

Minimum liability is third-party cover. The car's worth enough to justify having fully comprehensive cover, which currently comes to around £400 a year. The reason it's so high is a combination of my age, the car's engine size, and my postcode (zipcode to you). I get windscreen/glass cover in there, plus a few other odds'n'sods. Medical isn't really an issue over here, since we have the NHS. That's not saying it's a bad idea to have some extra cover, but in the event of a hospitalisation, I still wouldn't have to worry about the bill.

I don't live in a bad area of the city, but my postcode gets lumped in with some rougher areas adjacent to me. It was actually cheaper to insure the car for the city center, where it's more at risk from some drunk wanting a wing mirror!

And amazingly, there are still some insurers out there who don't think I'm old enough to be driving "such a powerful car"! (It's a 1.8) This is the first year my premium's been sub-£500 since I bought the car four-and-a-half years ago :-( I've been driving for more than ten years, had a full license for nine and my own car (and full no-claims bonus) for the last seven. Go figure...

Of course, the technical term for insurance is a "sucker bet", but if it was called that, noone'd buy it... :)

Does your father live in Scotland as well? You should have your agent "quote" you insurance for different addresses to see where it is cheapest, and have your vehicle rated there.

With our customers, if I have someone who is in a bad part of town, and their sister-n-law has a house in a nearby city, I'll rate them at THAT addrss instead to get them a cheaper rate, but their bill goes there and I tell them they have to remember to pay their premiums on time. That might help get the premium down some too.

It'll be time consuming, but video surveillance is a good thing to do. A cousin of mine and I caught a vandal who was stabbing his Honda Accord (?) with a screwdriver and putting deep holes in it.

We watched them do it, and video taped it, and called the police over to watch the tape and then followed the pigs...um, cops...over to their house and Tim told them he wouldn't ask for their arrest if they paid for the damages, which they did.

Set up a video camera to film the vehicle, catch them on tape doing it, and VOILA! put that brat away!!

Funny how this started as a survey, and now we're offering each other vigilante advice. Hmm.

Of course, there's always my form of punishment: Smack him continuously in the back of the head with a rubber chicken while telling really bad jokes!!

Uh....I've done that...only it was like baseballs for me.

Of course, I also set my driveway on fire once. When I was 24. But it was MY driveway, not my NEIGHBOR'S.

Yeah, for sure I'm ditching the kid's skateboard...not sure exactly what I'll do with it. I may dismantle it and leave him the board itself, so he knows it's not just stolen or missing...and then he'll spend the money to replace the wheels, and I'll take them again...

Last year's Bonfire Night went one step further. Apparently a kid fired a firework directly at an oncoming car. The thing went straight through the windscreen and out the back. I don't think anyone was hurt, fortunately. And my mother reported that she saw cars kerbcrawling, with the occupants throwing lit fireworks out the windows at kids walking home from school.

The problem is that it's far too easy for kids to obtain fireworks over here - there have even been reports of them playing with industrial fireworks! Some of it'll be unscrupulous shopkeepers, some will be theft, and some will be irresponsible parents or older siblings. I'd be in favour of a ban on the wretched things - risks aside, I'm thoroughly sick of the noise, which runs from late September to early December. Actual displays, even those run in peoples' back gardens, are fairly quiet affairs. Noise = kids. :(

Oy, I was wonderin' if someone was gonna' call me out on this. When I was 7 years old (yes, seven) I was arrested for arson, but because I was so young I was given a lesson on fire safety but I also had a juvenile record created for me too which was supposed to have disappeared when I turned 18, however it vanished before then, because when I was 15 I was arrested for breaking and entering, destruction of property, underage drinking and arson (again) and the record was never brought up or in question, which worked out for me as I might have landed in Juvy prison. Instead I was sentenced to approximately 250 hours of community service at a nursing home. I was a different person back then and it's because of the latter incident that made me realize a thing or two about how my life was. It's a moment in my life I'm certainly ashamed of and in all honesty isn't a fair or good representation of how my life really was AND just goes to show that hanging with the wrong crowd is dangerous. I was very lucky I was smart enough to make a few changes in my life and not end up for the worst. :o
