Lions Gate, Jim Henson Co. sign distribution deal

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- The Jim Henson Co. and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. said Monday they signed a distribution deal for more than 350 hours of content, including titles such as "Fraggle Rock: The Complete Final Season" and "Fraggle Rock: A Merry Fraggle Holiday."

Financial terms were not disclosed.

The agreement gives Lions Gate North American distribution rights to the content from Jim Henson Co.'s film and TV library, including television series, specials and catalog home entertainment titles.

Lions Gate shares rose 15 cents, or 2.5 percent, to $6.12 in premarket trading.

Thank you to those who wrote to Henson asking for this! I know it's been a while, but hopefully it will be worth the wait. I wonder if they will be able to carry over the S4 bonus material (possibly co-owned by HIT) and if Fraggles Look for Jobs will make this stand-alone set.

I also wonder if those 350 hours will allow for a boxed release of the animated series as well.

Can't wait to hear more!

Do not get excited to early. This deal might just be to ensure that they can continue selling the complete boxset. As the article says the deal lets them have access to all of the Henson series/films. I want to see a realease of the 4th season before I will believe it.

I'm pretty sure the old titles can continue to be sold. The expiration of the HIT contract means they can't do more.

This arrangement clearly shows Henson wants to do more home video, like the holiday title obviously meant for the end of the year. The final season was mentioned because it's a priority; I doubt they'd deliberately leave it unreleased.

It's a little too late for me, but I do hope they actually release season 4 by itself for other shafted fans.

I wonder if A Merry Fraggle Holiday will combine The Bells of Fraggle Rock with Blanket of Snow, Blanket of Woe (which, in my opinion, are the episodes A Festive Fraggle Holiday should have paired).

That's what I'm wondering, or is there some unknown, previously unreleased FR Christmas thing I'm unaware of? Or something completely new would be AWESOME :wisdom:

YES! Just when I was about to cave in and sell all my Fraggle DVD's to buy the complete series set this news comes out! This is just great! :excited: I'm not sure if I'll buy A Merry Fraggle Holiday (I assume it'll have "The Bells of Fraggle Rock," "The Perfect Blue Rollie" and some other episode) since it's essentially stuff I've bought before, but this is still very good news!

Just a heads up on Lionsgate - they did the ALF DVD's - used syndicated transfers, last few seasons had no extra features. They only ever commit to do special features if they are sure the discs will sell big. Hit were definitely the preferred option for Fraggle.

Nice there will be a seperate Fraggle release though.

Well, considering Lionsgate released this stuff once before with no problems, I can only hope they continue that with the separate season 4 set.

Yes, there's really no reason to believe the S4 episodes will be any different from the Complete Series. The real questions are about what bonus features and/or replica material might be included.

And they used REALLY terrible tapes for Ninja Turtles. They really did. Casey Jones:Outlaw Hero had so many VHS artifacts, you could have sworn it was a bootlegged release.

Great news none the less.... hope this opens doors for the animated series.

I thought the first two, maybe three, single Turtles discs looked about as good as they could. I'm not sure what format the masters exist on in the first place, but I don't think daily cartoon shows from that era will ever look stunning. The subsequent volumes and season sets did take a tumble, but reviews I've read seem to indicate the more recent sets look better.

Anyway, I think Lionsgate is preferrable over HIT in this case. What HIT did was unforgivable. There might be as many people kicking themselves now as there were a year ago.

I agree! I only wish that they had added the Fraggles Look For Jobs video as a bonus feature. As of right now it's now, but I suppose that could change between now and the release date.

From what I gathered, Karen was set to do it, Corey Edwards was set to film it, Henson created a puppet for it, but then something went wrong between Henson and Hit and the DVD series set was just pushed out there without the new addition. :smirk:

Also, like minor muppetz, I'm wondering why the Holiday release's bonus features include Emmet Otter and Christmas Toy features. I'm really interested in "taking a look" at the Christmas Toy. I hope its not just a five minute clip from the special.

Im happy everyone else can have it now. But sad that I gave in and bought them all again to get the 4th... and will probably buy the 4th now. lol. I wish, since its been delayed, they would add more than what came with the full set! Like advantages to buying both. Like the new Red Skit, and Fraggle's look for jobs and stuff. that way when I buy the 4th AGAIN, I wont just be buying a new slab of card board to hold a copy of the same stuff I now have doubles of. :excited::coy::smirk:

Seems Lion'sgate actually listened to complaints this time out. not only did they release S4 separately (they look to be actual copies of the last season set in the complete series... I'm dumbfounded as to why they didn't do that...I dunno... Sooner?) they also released the TMNT season 7 in a box set, instead of the separate single disks with figures they had.

I hope Henson can do great without Hit. Seems they cared up until they realized the movie wasn't going to be in 2009 or 2010, and they just seemed impatient for the whole thing.

HIT was the showrunner before and made the decision to hold S4. Last year's complaints were rightly directed towards them.

Now it's just Lionsgate and Henson.

Not surprised by that :p LOL , i say that to say that HIT wanted to run the show the way that they did .

Maybe lions gate will treat henson the way that it should be treated with respect

Well I think this is all good news. Any new Fraggle stuff is OK by me, of course I already have S1,2 & 3, and the Complete boxset, but I will still buy S4, Lets hope they add some great replica/printed stuff as a bonus to encourage people to get it, maybe the Fraggle Bible/Encyclopedia?

The Xmas DVD is great to, The Bells Of Fraggle Rock is probably my most fave episode, it'll be great to have it on a single disc release. I do think it sounds a bit like and Advertising DVD though with the other Henson stuff on it. I wonder what other two episodes are on..............Blanket of Snow and Blue Rollie possibly? How many of these singe disc releases will they release though, and how many times can we buy the same episodes over and over just cos there re packaged? Mybe they'll do the Best of Gobo, with several Gobo eps, Best Of Wembley, red, etc etc?

Roll on Nov!

Figured they'd have the ability to do it, what with having created Season 4 discs already; also figured correctly that they'd stick with the same color scheme as they did on the series set (blue for S1, purple S2, green S3, red S4).

I wasn't in a position to buy the whole series set, so I'm glad I can get the last season at last.

As for the holiday release, might the other (presumably) two episodes be "Mirror, Mirror" (about Red's birthday) and "Boober and the Glob" (about Joke Day)? Or perhaps "Capture the Moon" (about a Fraggle festival), "Marooned" (Boober's birthday), or "Uncle Matt Comes Home" (less likely).

I'm so very GLAD to know they are releasing this final season on a single version and not the boxset. I was going to buy the complete boxset one day at Bestbuy and they didn't have it. Then it just made me mad as ever. I thought i'm never going to find it and just thought if i ever do it would later on in my life or future wise.

So when i heard this and saw the art i just had to call my friend and tell him that i wouldn't have to buy the boxset he was that's cool. Not real excited as i was being he's not a muppet fan but still glad to know i was going to finally complete the series. Can't wait to buy both things. Whooooopieeeeee! :excited:

THATS EXTREMELY AWSOME!

Thank you so much for getting this thread going to get the news out there and showing us a picture. Really awesome. Thanks so much!

On top of this, earlier today i found a Wembly pvc with a musical note in his hand, and Gobo (non car) from Mc Donalds, at a Savers. Which is a huge pre used/owned store... like a giant everyday yard sale.

I bought them... despite the fact that i own Wembly already... this one looks brand new, while my old one has very minimal color wear and is somewhat dirty in the creases... i was a kid who loved playing with my muppety pvc sets :)

Well, I guess I now have a reason to sell my complete series set. I mean, if they are re-releasing the complete series set, why not just buy it again? I mean, as long as the discs won't be sliding out of place and getting scratched up. I'm not sure how they would fit the discs so they wouldn't have problems, with what they call the "bookshelf look." Unless the discs are in seperate cases, such as with the Family Guy Stewie Head set from amazon.

Here's something I would like to know, however. Come time to release the re-packaged complete series set, are they going to recall the old set, or just stop making the old set? I guess what I'm asking is, do u think that lionsgate will let you sort of trade in your old set for like a discount or something off of the new re-packaged set? Probably not, but I thought I would ask anyway.

I assume they'll just keep the old ones on the market anyway. Despite it's shortcomings and my lack of owning it, the complete series set might appeal to some extreme die-hard collectors, I know I liked the binder look of the original even though I didn't own it. You probably would be better off to sell it if you wanted to.

Interesting new development... I suppose for those who haven't already purchased the series set or the previous individual season, the new series set would be the way to go. Personally, I'd like to see some pics of the inner design of both the Season 4 and newly designed series sets before I decide just what one I'll go with.

On a side note; Is anyone else exceptionally disappointed with the abscence of Mokey on the cover of the newly designed series set?

Cool. This is a clear attempt to introduce a more efficient, less expensive complete set into the market, which is great. And it's coming the same day as S4. Exactly what should have transpired a year ago.

One concern: neither of these sets appear to include replica material. Based on the new, smaller design of the complete set, it probably couldn't include the full-sized reproduction of the Michael Frith poster.

Either way, it's nice they're going to this sort of effort at all. And it's also nice to know Henson is able to re-issue all the bonus material without HIT.
