Tough Pigs posted a link to an article about this yesterday, yet when I clicked on Amazon, there was no sign of the votting. I also did a google search, and found quite a few online articles about this. I was suspicious since it was posted on april fools day (and I e-mailed the author of the article), but it's good to have found it.

However, out of those, as far as I know, the string reminder sketch is the only one that hasn't been commercially available in english.

But there are some things to consider:
Carribean Amphibian has been released on an out-of-print video but not any region 1 DVDs (it's been on some international DVD releases).
Out of the Pinball Number Count segments, do they have to consider the #12 segment? It's already been released oon video and DVD twice (granted, I don't have either release), and only the #2 and #4 segments have been released on other english DVDs. Then again, it'd be a shame for tis release to not include any pinball cartoons, and a pity that it's apparantly this or none (I'd be surprised if multiple pinball segments are to be considered). I would have chosen #5, the only one not on sesamestreet.org (interestingly, I think all of the nominated clips are available on the website). When I checked the results, this one was in the lead.
While Henson Ball has been released twice on DVD, accoridng to the clip provided the powder ending is to be included. Only the cherry version is on DVD (and Henson Ball is the one I voted for).
Elmo's Debut is not really his first appearance. When I first read that title, I was intrigued, wondering if that was really his first appearance, or the first appearance where he was referred to by name. Instead, it's the 1990s song Happy Tapping, made long after he'd been introduced (unless "Elmo's Debut" is an alternate title, referring to his tap-dancing debut). While it has been released twice on video and DVD, the clip provided is longer than on either release.
I was hoping that all of the street scenes from the "Big Bird's Number 4 Show" episode would be included, not just I Just Adore Four. But if it wins, maybe the whole thing will be released.
For those wodnering (and al you really have to do to know is click on the link), the cast version of What's the name of That Song? nominated is the original version. Since it was recently released on DVD, I was sort of hoping that the 1990s version would have been nominated.

And here is a listing of how many times each segment has been released on video and/ or DVD in america:
The Alligator King - 5
King of 8 - 3
Martian Beauty - 3
Pinball #12 - 2
Henson Ball - 2
I Just Adore Four - 2
Happy Tapping (AKA Elmo's Debut) - 2
What's the Name of That Song? - 1
Carribean Amphibean - 1
String Reminder - 0

I wonder if there'll be any update voting? For example, once this deadline ends, I wonder if a new set of nominated clips will be up. It'd be interesting if fans could vote for a Sesame Street News clip, or a Monsterpiece Theater clip.

It doesn't make sense why they can't add all of those clips. Plus, notice that the Pinball segment has the highest vote, not that I don't enjoy it, but most of us have seen that too many times already. But then again, that's just my opinion.

One thing I thought of, regarding the fact that most of the nominated clips have been released on DVD (in many cases, twice) already, is that the winning clip obviously won't be the only clip making it to the release.

Indeed, why wouldn't all these clips be included? A two-disc set commemorating such a milestone seems a bit on the light side. This should be something that far surpasses the value of the Old School sets.

There are a lot of classic momwents that haven't ever been released on video. Some of those (strung tied, Happy Tapping, Martian Beauty) may be a bit well-known, but I don't think are that well-known. Not enough that they have to be included on an anniversary release. It'd be a shame if this release were to have no Pinball Number Count at all. The DVD seems to be bigger than previous anniversary specials (especially since it seems that it'll be just clips... But then again, we don't know that there won't be any linking footage). That, in my mind, is one of the top ten best-known recurring segments.

I've noticed that the most-released semgnets up for nomination are all animated. Stuff like Rubber Duckie, C is for Cookie, and I Love Trash aren't nominated. I'm sure that they'll all be represented somehow, though I don't know which specific clips will be chosen.

I recall that back when somebody had contaxcted Sesame Workshop and recieved info on SW considering making Old School sets, it had been said that Sesame Workshop needs to renegociate residuals for everything that gets released on video. I guess it makes since that if voting is done that most nominated clips be things that SW has already released, as negotians have already been done. It'd be a shame if Sesame Workshop couldn't clear residuals for whatever the winning clip will be.

I wonder if multiple votes are allowed, or if there's some way to detect computers that users already voted on. I have occassionaly checked to view the results, but the first choice is always selected once I look at the voting page. I like seeing what segments are in the lead, but if I wan tto keep checking, should I make sure the vote is on what I most want to see on the release?

And you know, the fact that hardly any of the clips that I would put on a wishlist are nominated is a good sign. Maybe those are definately considered.

It would be ironic if all of the clips were stuff that I either want to see the most, stuff that I haven't seen in a long time and want to see again, or stuff that I most want to see get an official DVD release (yes, even though they are available for free online).

Oh yeah... we'll likely see those (for the twelth thousandth time) on the release. I voted String Tied, since it's the only thing that hasn't been released on DVD yet. Caribbean Amphibian would be the second choice, but we need that classic Ernie Bert segment to get represented on the DVD.

I'm just disappointed they didn't have a skit request line... I want to see some pretty obscure stuff on this DVD, so I feel I get my money's worth (and not just wind up buying the same ol' stuff). I really want to see Surprise by the Proto-Monotones somewhere (in English with all the cut scenes in tact), or some of the Mo Willems or John R. Dilworth Noodles and Ned stuff... some of the 90's animations you still sometimes see, but haven't been released on DVD yet.

I had thought that all of the nominated clips could be viewed at sesamestreet.org, but I checked and I couldn't find the string segment there. I guess not all of them are on the site. Also, it appears that the site has the cherry ending of Henson Ball, while the clip at amazon is the powder version.

I really want a lot of rarities mixed with many common classics not previously released. I feel that it's important to include Sesame Street News and Monsterpiece Theater, and I figure that they will be represented, but I wonder if there'll be multiple sketches of each or just one each (in my mind it'd be logical to include at least one per disc, though there aren't many News segments made between 1989 and 2009).

It would be wonderful if the set could fit in every recurring character, segment, and situation in some way. I don't know how possible that would be.

I don't know if clicking "vote and view results" automatically gives votes to segments or not, or if Amazon can only allow one vote per computer for unregistered users, but if you want to check, I would suggest clicking on a clip you'd want to see on there (the first clip chosen, The Alligator King, always has a check unless you click on a different choice... So unless you want that to have it's sixth DVD release I'd suggest marking a clip you really want included if you desire to check what's in the lead). Last I checked the string tied sketch was in the lead.

All in all minor, great list!

I thought I did put Everyone Likes Ice Cream on the list, but looking at it, I clearly didn't (I guess it's an oversight). And there are a lot of stuff on that list I'd like to see on the set that I didn't include, but we can't have everything, and I tried to limit on same-ness. I thought that the set should include multip,e skits with some of the same old school characters (especially to emphasize that they were regular characters).

But maybe I did go a bit overboard on wishing for clips from the first two seasons...

Man, looking at my list, there are quite a few things that woukd've gone on disc 2 that I forgot to include. Stuff like Things That I Remember, Let's Lay an Egg, Outrageous Makeover: Home Addition, A Cookie is a Sometimes Food, and Sleep! I also regret not listing any CGI Twiddlebugs sketches.

Man, and there are quite a few characters that, to my knowledge, I didn't list any sketches with. Characters like Little Bird, Rodeo Rosie, Sam the Robot, Aristotle, The Busby Twins, Shivers the Penguin, Monty, Barkly, Alice, Natasha, Ingrid, and Humphrey. Some of those I don't know of any exact sketches featuring them. But I probably also should have listed another Two-Headed Monster sketch or two (man, and I didn't list any of their word-sounding sketches... Shame on me!)

But back to the main topic, last night I dreamt that Amazon added more clips to vote for. I can't remember all of the clips, but I do recall the sketch where Jim Carrey showed emotions with his feet being one of the clips.

You know, for months since this project was announced (heck, evne before any such announcement, as I had been wishing for such a set... only a four-disc set focusing on different 10-year periods per disc), I had thought that the 1999 special Sesame Street Unpaved would make a good bonus feature. And that special includes some of the clips nominated, like What's the Name of That Song? Henson Ball (I can't remember which ending was shown in that speical), The Alligator King, and King of 8. It also had a Pinball Number Count segment, but I can't remember which one.

minor muppetz

If this set must include material found on the Old School sets, I'd prefer it to be some of the street scenes from the first episode (and maybe some inserts, like Henson #3, Jazz #2, Wanda the Witch, and Kermit's W lecture... Though I'd prefer different Henson and Jazz number segments), the cast reciting the alphabet, Big Bird's first meeting with Snuffy, and Barkley being renamed.

Well, the voting should have ended by now. I clicked on the link, and it's written like it was when it was laucnhed (no updates to it being closed). I looked at the results, and it looks like Bert and Ernie: String Tied will be on this release.

So that's one, one sketch that we know will be included, and nine, nine sketches that we know will NOT be included. A-ha-ha!:batty:

Dang I wanted to see the Aligator King short. :(

You can see it at sesamestreet.org, and I think on youtube and Sesame Workshop's hulu chanel (not positive there). Or on the Amazon votign page (at least while it's up there). And you can see it if you find, buy and/ or rent copies of Old School Vol. 1, Sesame Street 25 Wonderful Years: A Musical Celebration, The Great Number Game, and/ or Elmo's Sing-Along Guessing Game. It has plenty of availability.

This may not make much of a difference, or at least not now (I figure it's too late for Sesame Workshop to make any changes), but I've been thinking about what would be most important to include on this set, regardless of what we all think is important.

I'd be surprised if this set did not include anything with Big Bird, Oscar, Ernie, Bert, Kermit, Cookie Monster, Grover, Herry, Prairie Dawn, Elmo, Zoe, Telly, Baby Bear, Rosita, Snuffy, The Count, Abby Cadabby, Murray, Natasha, or Slimey. But regarding "old school" characters, I feel that it's important for the set to have at least one clip with the following characters: Roosevelt Franklin, Guy Smiley, Forgetful Jones, Biff and Sully, Don Music, Mr. Johnson, Sherlock Hemlock, Mumford, Martians, Honkers, Dingers, Twiddlebugs, and Two-Headed Monster. I feel like it's important for everybody to be included, but it probably would be hard to represent all the characters.

Of all the recurring Muppet sketches, I feel that it's most important to include Sesame Street News and Monsterpeice Theater. My instincts tell me there should be five or six News segments, and four or five Monsterpeice Theater segments, some on both discs (there aren't many News options for disc 2, if it focuses on seasons 21-40). I think one news report with Don Music and one report with Dr. Nobel Price are musts.

I sort of feel like a full Elmo's World should be on there as well. I wouldn't be disapointed if EW was excluded altogether, but feel that it belongs, especially if footage from certain street stories are included. Other recurring Muppet sketches that I see as a must for the set include waiter Grover (this set should have 2-4, plus some additional Mr. Johnson sketches), Super Grover (I'm thinking 3), The Letter of the Day, The Number of the Day, Spanish Word of the Day, Murray Has a Little Lamb, Global Grover, and maybe Journey to Ernie, Hero Guy, and Monster Clubhouse.

For the non-Muppet inserts, I feel like it should have one sketch each for Jim Henson's season 1 number series, Jazz Numbers, The Mad Painter, The Bellhop, The Typewriter, Teeny Little Superguy, Bert and Ernie's great Adventures, and Pinball Number Count, and a few more for Fay Ray and Suzie Kabloozie.

Well, that's all I think for now.

Just got some more details on this upcoming release from Sesame Workshop -- "Sesame Street: 40 Years of Sunny Days" will be released on DVD on November 10, 2009 (which is exactly 40 years, to the day, since Sesame Street debuted).

The 2-disc DVD set will include over five and a half hours of iconic moments, songs, and celebrity segments from the past 40 years; plus exclusive never-before-seen backstage footage.

Hmmmm... If it's five hours long, could each disc be two and a half hours, or might one dominate the other?

I wonder if I should look back at the wishlist I posted here, watch the ones that are on sesamestreet.org and check the legnth, then search youtube for some and check the legnth, and then for first season skits not on youtube check the CTW archives first seaosn show content, which lists run times for almost every skit, and then see if what I can find adds up to five hours or less (or more).

It's great that there is an official release date. It's interesting that the season premier, the release of this, and the book are all coming out on november 10.

Wow, the only way it would be better if they actual planned a Television special for the night of Nov. 10th that we don't know about. :insatiable:

They're just gonna show the season opener again. I guess it's a budgetary thing. I blame PBS for it, myself. The only prime time specials they want are for pledge month, and they have to be some elderly friendly music program, some Celtic Music program where they don't actually sing any music that's actually Celtic, and a bunch of infomercials for a book that the writers donated for tax credits.

I'm really hoping that this collection isn't 90% already released footage.

Me, too! I'd rather it be 90 percent (man, how do you make that percent symbol?) material available on sesamestreet.org.

It's kind of interesting... For most of the choices that didn't win, we still got something on this set that was pretty much similar. Pinball #12 didn't win, but we still got a Pinball segment. The Alligator King and Martian Beauty didn't win, but we still got a Budd Luckey cartoon (though only one). King of 8 and Henson Ball didn't win, but we still got two Henson films (though I'd be shocked if we didn't get any baker films). We didn't get the original What's the Name of That Song? but we still got a version of the song. We didn't get Carribian Amphibean, but we did get a Kermit song from the late-1980s that had been released on The Best of Kermit on Sesame Street, but never on any full-english-language north american DVD.

It's only a little hard to determine what Big Bird and Elmo segments are there in place of I Just Adore Four and Elmo's Debut (aka Happy Tapping). I guess Elmo's Song is there in place of Elmo's Debut (pretty much everything else starring Elmo pairs him with a celebrity). And I can't think of what Big Bird segments could be a good substitute... There's no solo Big Bird songs, and no Big Bird clips from the 1970s.

And most interestingly, the remembering string sketch is only a bonus feature, "Fan Favorite". I wonder if all the main program clips were already planned... If that's the case, we could have gotten two Pinball segments, or two versions of What's te Name of That Song? And in fact we do have another season two Bert and Ernie segment on the set.

And I wonder if the voting was unfair competition. After all, one commercially unreleased segment vs. several that had been released commercially... If all the nominated clips were previously unreleased, I wonder if this one would have won. Or if the nominations were half-released sketch and half-unreleased.
