View Full Version : 50 greatest shows of all time

How many of you have seen the special or magazine "TV guide's 50 greatest shows of all time?" I got to admit, It was a bad special, and I had problems with some of the choises. But Ones I liked were Taxi, Sesame Street (which is why I post this on a Muppet Board) Frasier, Cheers, I Love Lucy, HoneyMooners, Seinfeld, The Simpsons etc. etc.
# 47 was one of my favorite shows, Rocky and Bullwinkle. Besides Henson, Jay Ward is on the list of people I most Admire. I'm cleaning out a closet, so I can put my Moose and Squirrel Memorablia in it, making a shrine (I plan to do the same with the Muppets, once the figures come out!) I was outraged when the show was mentioned breifly in passing (not even a short clip!)
But I must confess, my main complaint is that Buffy the Vampire Slayer made the list. Why, oh, why is it considered a great TV show of all time? I don't even think it's good! It's campy, It's goofy, it moved from WB to UPN for crying out loud. There are thousands of shows I can think of better than that! (Untouchables, Dragnet, Flintstones) Most of the other shows were groundbreaking, or intellegent! Buffy is neither, in my opinion! And they spent five minutes on it. Half of it was Sarah Michell Gellar patting herself on the back, saying "I love me!" It's the only show she talked about! Probably the only one she knows of! I hate Miss Gellar!!! She's the reason I don't want to see Scooby Doo in theaters (I have to admit, it's type casting to make her the Ditz of the Mystery Inc. gang!) WHy couldn't they have picked, I dunno, The Muppet Show !?!?!? I'm sorry If I offended any fans, but to be up there with greats like Lucille Ball and Johnny Carson....

I'm kind of surprised that "Sid Caeser's Your Show of Shows" wasn't on there. I mean, it's practcially the grandfather of 20th Sentury Americacn comedy having been the start for someo f the most prolific comedy minds in the bsiness including, Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, Woody Allen, and Larry Gelbart. As well as seting the stage for shows like SNL, Carol burnett and even our beloved Mupet Show.
I haven't seen anyone who has agreed with TV Guide's List so I haven't paid any attention to it. Ya know, when it comes down to it, who is this allmighty-TV GOD who says what the 50 greatest sohws have been? not worth getting all fussed up about if you ask me?

Sid Caesar? On My list or theirs? It was among the 50 shows. I'm proud to say that at least the mighty Caesar was listed on mine as well. Of course, time constraints (of mine) forced me to etc. etc. some of them. But I'm surprised that the only Muppet thing listed was Sesame Street (two if you count Scred and the rest from Saturday Night Live.)

That list was just stupid (not yours, Janice). I mean, there were definitely some good picks, but a lot of it seemed to be just what's hip, as it were, and not what's truly great television. However, I have to agree with Matleo, that it's not worth getting worked up over.

Yeah, TV is pretty much trash nowdays. As long as the shows keep up with the fads and popular culture they do well. Characterization, originality, and morals have all pretty much been thrown out the window. :sympathy:

Bugs Bunny Looney Tunes
Do you think Looney Tunes would really count. They were cartoons shown in theaters so, um... yeah.

Well said. I haven't watched too much network tv in years. There is not much there that really appeals to me anymore, and I don't commit myself to watching too many shows anyway. Most of the time I find something more valuable and worthwhile on cable. :)

I personally like Buffy the Vampire Slayer a lot. I can understand why people think it's a bit... campy if they've never actually watched it. The title and the whole concept does seem a flaky and like a B movie horror flick and that tends to put people off and they don't give it much of a chance. But if you actually watch it (for more than just a few minutes), you'll find it's actually one of the best written, best produced shows on television with some of the most well rounded characters I know of. There's a lot of shows I like but that's the only show I watch that I can say that about.

I'd blame the network heads for keeping reality tv on the air. However, there doesn't seem to be any originality with television shows anymore that strike me as good. Shows like I Love Lucy, Cheers, Frasier, MASH, etc. were good because of the writing they had and the quality of the show that was being shown. I don't watch a lot of new stuff on television, but I find myself watching old programs that are good.

My best all time tv shows are Green Acres, The Andy Griffith Show, The Honeymooners, All in the Family, I Love Lucy, The Flintstones, The Twilight Zone, The Wonder Years, and , of course, Sesame Street. Two other ones that were film shorts but have been shown in tv show format for years that I also rank up there are The 3 Stooges (the Curly episodes) and Tom & Jerry (the 40's and 50's Tex Avery ones). There's a lot of other good shows I've enjoyed that aren't as good as these classics, like The Odd Couple, The Jeffersons, Alice, Dragnet, and Petticoat Junction.

Looks like this very thing happened to me too - it's been a month since the last post here! :)
There's a lot of other good shows I've enjoyed that aren't as good as these classics, like The Odd Couple, The Jeffersons,
I now have the complete third season of "The Jeffersons" and am going through a couple of those each day. As I said, I wouldn't rank it as high as "All in the Family" but I still find it to be a very satisfying and enjoyable show. Lots of funny people like Sherman Hemsley, Marla Gibbs (as Florence the maid), and Sesame Street's number painter Paul Benedict. There were a total of ten seasons and I intend to get every one of them as they are released to DVD. The show never "jumped the shark" to me, although, as with most shows, I thought the earlier seasons were the best ones. Actually in most shows I like I often feel that the first year or two were very good, but then by seasons 3 through 5 they got really excellent (as the charcaters were fully defined and perfected and the writing was really peaking) and then by the end of the series there is sometimes a little decline (sometimes due to characters leaving as with Don Knotts and Jim Nabors in "The Andy Griffith Show" and Rob Reiner, Sally Struthers and then Jean Stapleton in "All in the Family"). "Green Acres" also never jumped the shark to me. But that show was still going strong in 1971 with high ratings. CBS decided to cancel it as part of its purging of "rural" shows, like "The Beverly Hillbillies".
By the way, I love the theme song of both "Green Acres" and "The Jeffersons" ( Movin' On Up ). Some shows I fast forward past the opening theme songs but these two shows I can't resist the opening theme song every time!

This thread is from about six years ago. Would you believe I still can't get over the fact they put "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" on there. I gotta be the only one in the universe that doesn't like that show. No thank you.

To be honest, I don't watch a lot of TV (lotta junk on and I don't have cable), but here goes.
In no particular order:
Twin Peaks (this is probably my favorite show ever, not very muppety I know, but a brilliant dark, weird, comic masterpiece, at least the first season is)
Sesame Street
The Simpsons
The Muppet Show
Fraggle Rock
Desperate Housewives
Between the Lions
Monty Python's Flying Circus
Whose Line is it Anyway?
American Idol (sometimes...)
Old Saturday Night Live (and some newer bits)
The Dave Chapelle Show
Looking at anytimepally's list, I realized my very serious deletion of THUNDERCATS!
The Wonder Years and the old Twilight Zone episodes are pretty great as well.
Also, I have the feeling that I would kind of love The Carol Burnett show, but have only seen bits. Any opinions on this?

I used to feel the same way. Have you watched a few Buffys in sequential order? The writing is sharp. It is intended to be campy and often makes fun of itself. It would definitely go in my mid-top 50 along with The Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock, I Love Lucy, Law & Order, Gilmore Girls, Invader Zim, AbFab, Murder she Wrote, Batman the Animated Series, Veronica Mars, Sports Night, Family Guy, X-Files, Mr. Bean and many others that escape my attention at the moment.
The thing about these lists is that they are created to sell issues so people can agree and disagree with them. It's lazy writing and a cheap ploy by entertainment mags to sell issues. These lists are usually riddled with modern programs that will soon fade while other more classic programming is overlooked.
Buffy, however, is not one of them. The fact that it changed networks had little to do with popularity and more to do with salaries and budget constraints. There is actually a very popular "season 8" in graphic novel form right now selling like crazy! Word is that there will eventually be a theatrical release (not associated with the 90s movie of course). I have the whole DVD series and I'll tell you it's one of the most solid shows I've ever seen.
By the way, Joss Whedon is creating a new program for Fox titled "Dollhouse" staring Eliza Duskhu (known for playing Buffy's friend Faith) as a spy whose memory is erased and recreated with each mission. Could be good, could fizzle. We'll see. He does have a solid network commitment so it won’t immediately go the way of many other Fox shows.
Sorry to bump your old thread, but once it's out there it's out there and fair game! :o
That makes three of us at least! ;)
And here's four of us, lol! :D I'm sorry, but Buffy's just not a show I can personally get into.
50 is really a lot. I'm not sure I could name that many shows as my faves. I'm not even sure I could name 10 shows that I consider to be the greatest of all time. I don't watch enough TV, and I'm insanely (and too) picky, lol.

Well said. I haven't watched too much network tv in years. There is not much there that really appeals to me anymore. Most of the time I find something more valuable and worthwhile on cable. :)
I have to agree and say that I feel the exact seem way you do. Theres just not much at all that appeal to me anymore on network TV let alone cable.
And I'm the exact same way when it comes to TV. I'm very picky when it comes to choosing what I like and watch on Television.

Ehhh... to me, it was a show geeky people watched because they thought Sarah Michelle Gellar was hot. (kidding... kidding...well, maybe just a little) I don't know why, but I never liked her. Had I known she played April in the new TMNT movie, I wouldn't have seen it (and coming from a green blooded TMNT fan, that is something). Not that she didn't do a great job, though. Don't know why I tolerated her in both Scooby Doo movies... of course, the woman playing Velma was hot....
I did like the Puppet show episode of Angel, though. But again, it's not my type of thing.

I would admit it if true, but I'm unfortunately not that geeky a guy (except when it comes to Muppets). Odd, but not geeky per say - and my libido swings the other way so Gellar's hotness factor doesn't phase me. She's okay, I guess. Depends upon the lighting. Anyway, I find that reasoning presumptuous and contrary to my taste for the show. I've met fans of all types in my daily life. If I watched a science fiction television program for hotness value I’d still be tuning into Smallville or Supernatural, but those programs don’t have the qualities I admire from Joss Whedon’s work.
It was Buffy’s clever writing that got me. I must admit that I was initially dismissive of the show and passed it off as a guilty pleasure until seeing enough episodes to note how well crafted it was in many respects. That's what kept people coming back, not the star-power or hotness factor. It really didn't have much of either. However, if you'd watched a few full episodes Buffy you'd realize that title aside it was very much an ensemble show.
I didn't like Gellar's work in the Scooby Doo movies, but hers’ was not the worst performance. Her husband, Freddy Prinze Jr. (who I probably should find hot, but don't) made for a horrible Fred!
My love of film (well, maybe I'm film geeky) would not prevent me from seeing a picture due to the inclusion of any particular actor. If that were true I would have missed every Kevin Costner movie (and there are a few good ones). I don't understand that logic. I didn’t agree with casting Gellar for April in the latest TMNT movie. She wasn’t horrible, but didn’t bring anything to the table either. It could have been anyone.
Somebody should coin a new phrase for this like “Chipmunked” (after the recent motion picture) for pointless voice casting of trendy actors that serves no purpose except promotion.
Recap of Buffy attributes: Clever writing, story archs, character relationships, modern mythology, campy, witty with a sense of humor about itself.
I can still see why some wouldn't give it a chance and why others, even given a chance, still may not find it their thing. No judgements either way. :attitude:

Fred's Fred made him come off way too stupid, instead of the straight headed leader of the group. I blame the script too.

Funny thing about that. The studio wanted big names to appear in the film, and the Mirage group (the creators of TMNT) didn't want that. So they let them appear in the film, but you didn't know it was them until the end credits. It wasn't untli 2 weeks when the film was out did they actually do any advertising about what celebrities were in the film.
I exaggerate, though. i would have seen it anyway. Though, I heard that Grey Delise (Voice actress, current voice of Daphne in Scooby Doo, as well as Mandy in Billy and Mandy to name a few) was supposed to be in the film. Maybe she was penciled in to play April. Or at least did her voice in the scratch track.

And don't for get the distracting and problematic blonde hair he has in those pictures. He seemed more like a club-kid's costume party Fred.
I'm showing my age here, but I remember when Tiffany (even then a pop-star past her prime) replaced the regular performer for Judy Jetson in their theatrical film. It was odd and unfortunate.
