hey all, it's nice to get back onto Muppet central. Just letting you guys know that I have half finished my Big Bird puppet/suit. I never thought that gluing over 5000 feathers individually would take sooooooo long .... I just need to make his legs now and he is done. I have also recently made replicas of a Gonzo puppet :concern: and Animal puppet :halo: - I will link some photos when I take them. Have a great day all :)

Can I make a suggestion. When you finish building Big Bird and are ready to take photos, you should try and get all of the replicas that you have and do one big group photo. But then again, that's just a suggestion. Think about it.

It takes many weeks to build a detailed puppet!

it does take me quite a while to make each one because I do have a day job and I make custom puppets - so i have to squeeze my own puppets in between all that....

Hey Jarrod (if thats your name... if not... it is now :) ) i've always seen great work from you but never expected Big Bird to be a part of your collection.
I myself thought to do a big bird. But i'm so amature its not something i can do off the bat.
If i may ask, did you make a foam base, then add feathers? Or can you not reveal what you used to stick feathers on.
Was it expensive to buy all those feathers?
Keeermit
05-23-2007, 05:10 AM
Hey there Cookie, yes thats my REAL name, Big Birds head is a foam skull with feathers hot glued to it one at a time, his body is made with netting with hoops to give it shape - the feathers are also hot glued on one at a time - over 5000 feathers so far and counting, it has cost me a fair bit to make so far and I have just bought his large tail feathers which were expensive. I have been making him a little at a time so it hasn't been just one big cost, its been fun - and many many hours of work . Hope this helps
CoOKiE
05-23-2007, 12:52 PM
it does and thank you for answering my questions. Keep up the good work. Do you think you'd be walkin around with it when you're done?
I made a bruno last year and the only thing that made it not fun, was the way i made it was hard to get on by myself... but yea i admit to wearing it outside the house other then halloween night ;)
actually, can i ask what the name of the netting you used is called?
I like the Bart you made for Nancy, i'd love to see her bring that out for a DVD extra and puppeteer with it, lol.

How about making a Scooter puppet replica?
Super Scooter
05-27-2007, 02:30 PM
Okay, two things:
Awesomely incredible!
What are you using for arm rods? Are they removable? I CAN'T FIGURE ARM RODS OUT! :)
Great job, man!
You know what i don't get about arm rods? I know a lot of the time puppeteers use black because they are in the dark, but when they are gonna be visible why not use clear plastic, like its invisible. I don't get that - they're always black.
Super Scooter
05-27-2007, 06:24 PM
The clear plastic can be reflective if shot wrong, though. Still, it is a pretty good idea.
Fozzie Bear
05-28-2007, 12:14 AM
I use gray arm rods. Project Puppet has a great idea for removeable arm rods and I suggest it. It's in one of their patterns.

Wow! That's amazing! Those are spot-on perfect! I'm about to start making a new puppet and I need to know: what did you use for the eyes and (epsecially) how did you get Gonzo's nose colored just right? If there's any special tools I'd need please tell me; this next puppet I'm starting is going to be hard...and I've only done one before. :zany:

thanks once again for everyones kind words about my replicas :) . I am currently hard at work making a Pepe:rolleyes: , hopefully he will be finished soon. As far as questions about my gonzo replica - His eye mech was very difficult due to the angle of the eyes and eyelids but i would reccomend just using the mech technique they have on this forum ( just do a forum search for eye mechs) also his nose was hand carved and then dyed and airbrushed to give it the desired look. I have made many MANY gonzos over the years and have experimented with different approaches - i would suggest you do the same and don't expect your first ever gonzo to turn out perfect, mine certainly wasn't. Just have fun with it.

I already made the head of my Gonzo out of foam and I have almost all the materials I need for him including rit-dye. I bought two boxes of purple rit-dye and two boxes of rose pink rit-dye and I'm gonna mix them together and test it on a scrap piece of foam and see how it turns out before I dye the Gonzo head.
I love your replicas of Gonzo, Fozzie, Animal, Oscar, Elmo, Kermit and all your other cool puppets! I can't wait to see how your Pepe will turn out. Maybe after Pepe you can try to make Rizzo.

Melonpool
06-16-2007, 07:31 PM
I think Scooter can be patterned... actually, I think just about any shape can be made from flat foam. I've had a theory for quite some time that Scooter is a modified "Anything Muppet." If you look at the blue hillbilly characters in the first season you can see that their head shape is almost identical to Scooter's.

There is a photo of Scooter's head "undressed" in one of the old Muppet books and it looks like his head is just patterned out of sheets of foam. There's actually a Scooter head pattern (http://www.puppet-planet.com/ScooterPatterns.htm) that someone here made by dissecting a plush toy a few years back.

hi there,
just to let you guys guys about the supergrover, as totallyspiesfan pointed out supergrover doesn't have a logo on his chest - the reason is that I have made all the latest of each character and supergrover has not been wearing the logo in the latest supergrover segment e.g the DVD "A Celebration of me, Grover" . Also Ernie is in his PJ's until I make his stripe sweater. Cool, have a great day everyone

I would love to see the pictures, but will not join My Space under any circumstance. I'm one of the few people who just won't do it even though my friends are on there. Just find the place and specific branding smarmy and unnecessary. I know it’s not all like that. I have good friends who swear by My Space. I just find it creepy.
 I’m sure the work is amazing! Is there an alternative place where the images are posted where I don’t have to join up to see them?

Don't worry your not alone. I'm anti-MySpace myself. I find you can't trust anyone on that site no matter how secure it is.

Muppet Pro, the Amazon link at the top of the website keeps reaching out for anything with "Muppet" in the title and keeps bringing up some guy's "replicas" (who isn't Keeerrmit) that he is trying to sell. Scooter is among those. I would consider those a replica that someone has made.
I just don't see paying $2000 for something that isn't real!
Where can you buy block reticulated foam for carving? My partner and I made a Gonzo replica puppet, but we used sheet foam and there is a seam under his nose and top lip. I would much rather have it carved, but we don't know where to buy block foam.

You can go to a foam factory thats in your area. Do a Yahoo business search for one around you. It's better to actually go to the factory than buying online because online is more expensive and at the factory the have large pieces for sale rather than whole sheets. I bought several full yards of scott foam for $10, instead of the $60 it would have been
But here are some others.

We should have a puppet-replica-play-off between Keeeermit and the guy selling his stuff on e-bay and Amazon for WAYYY too much money! :)
(I choose Keeermit's).
I have to defend MR's replicas, though. They are fantastic and beautiful! If they were making puppets, I would definitely want them to talk to Keeermit as well as Terry, who does a terrific job on the Muppet MR Prototypes!
I asked Jarrod this question before, but he doesn't seem to keen on sharing info, but I'll ask again any way. For Gonzo's face, it looks like carved reticulated foam. Could you be generous enough to share where you are able to find the foam in large enough blocks to carve? My partner and I have made some replicas, but we used sheet foam for Gonzo's face since we couldn't locate large cubes of reticulated foam.

hi there, glad you like my replicas - I am still working on my Piggy but also started a new Fozzie as I wasnt overly happy with my other one.:o
I order my blocks of reticulated foam in from my local foam store - it usually needs to be ordered in full sheets ( like the size of a mattress) and its more than a couple of hundred dollars. Look around a foam shop may have off-cuts :)

Those replicas are no longer available on Amazon. They still get listed on the Amazon ad that appears here but someone (i can't imagine who:D ) reported them as copyright infringement to Amazon and Disney.

Could you be generous enough to share where you are able to find the foam in large enough blocks to carve? As Keermit said, just about any foam supply store (there are many in New York state) should be able to sell you a block large enough to carve. Try looking up upholstery suppliers in your Yellow Pages, they often sells blocks of polyfoam that are used to make cushions or foot stools.
For a large block of reticulated foam try Rogers Foam Corporation in Somerville, MA. Their website is http://www.rogersfoamcorp.com (you will likely have to make very large order from them though).

2 - Can you take us through a Muppet building from start to finish? Pics at each stage, materials used, hints and tips, tools needed, how-to's, specific paint, you name it... I know that there are tutorials out there, but yours are the best Muppets ever! (next to the Muppets of course!). You could do it like a blog, keeping us updated on each day. He has a mini tutorial on his website, showing how to make his wombat puppet. Personally I don't think he needs to give to much info because that is his job. If Jarrod was to tell us everything he knows he would be out of a job.
The best way to learn is trial and error. I know that every puppet I make I learn a little from and the puppets I mess up on I learn even more.
If you look at Jarrod's earlier work the muppet replicas were not always perfect. He had to try and try again he has made several versions of ernie and elmo and what not.
Making puppets takes time don't rush it and have fun making mistakes. Nobody is perfect when they start anything it takes determination and that is exactly what Jarrod has done.
Personally I don't think there is only one way to make a puppet go and explore options try different fabrics foams and what not. One of my college professors told me at art school playing it safe is boring. So lets see those mistakes and lets all learn from them.
