When I was in first or second grade, "Fraggle Rock" premiered. And I was instantly hooked.
But before that, there were cryptic commercials and little hints about a new Jim Henson production in the works for HBO. Something called...was it Fragile Rock?
At the time I had my first girlfriend. Well, girlfriend in the sense that we sat on the school bus together, went to each other's houses (with our parents, of course) and partnered up whenever we were asked to pick a "buddy" for a field trip or class project.
ANYway...
She was also a Muppet fan, and was also curious about this new HBO show. But we didn't understand the title.
Me: Is it Fragile Rock?
Her: Yes, I think so.
Me: Fragile Rock.
Her: Fragile Rock.
Me: Funny name for a show.
Her: Well, they are the Muppets...
Me: Yeah. I wonder if Kermit will be on it?
Her: Maybe.
Me: Just two more months!
Her: Maybe it's called Fraggle Rock.
Me: Fraggle Rock?
Her: Yeah.
Me: Fraggle...no, don't be silly! What's a Fraggle?
Her: I don't know.
Me: Fraggle Rock. Funny name for a show.
Her: Well, they are the Muppets.
Me: Yeah.
Of course I'm paraphrasing. I can't remember exactly what we said 24 years ago...24 years ago???!!!! Sheesh!
ANYway...
One of us took our HBO program guides to school, and studied it. We finally both came to the conclusion that the show was FRAGGLE Rock. But we still had no idea what a Fraggle was, and being Muppet/Jim Henson fans, the wait was agony.
Finally, the big night came. She and her mom came to my house and watched the premiere on my family's enormous 24-inch TV screen...and we were both blown away by what we saw!
From that night on, we were diehard Fraggle fans. The girl even reminded me of Red (still does). Alas, our "courtship" ended soon after, but we remained friends.
At least I still have the Fraggles. And every time I catch an episode, I inevitably think of my first gf, and our confusion over the title. And I still see her in Red. :excited:
I saw every episode of "Fraggle Rock" in its original run, many episodes more than once (HBO would rerun them during the week). My favorite episode is the one with the Terrible Tunnel. That voice coming from the tunnel used to scare me, especially on nights when I couldn't fall asleep. I swore I heard that creepy voice coming from somewhere in the house...:eek:
