Silly Creatures

I have a question with regards silly creatures.

In the episode "The Preachification of Convincing John", Convincing John refers to the silly creatures as "human beings". Have the Fraggles referred to the silly creatures as "human beings" at any other time? And, if not, does anyone besides Convincing John even know what a human being is?

By the way, I suppose this thread could be opened up to any other discussion you guys have on Silly Creatures.

Well, I think "silly creatures" was a name Traveling Matt made up. I don't think Convincing John would have necessarily used it. I don't know if anyone else used the term "human being."

Personally, I always thought John's mention of a "human being" was one of the many unexplained anachronisms the Fraggles used. They were always making reference to things they logically shouldn't know about; like milk bottles, Bleach, pickles, or Wembley's banana tree shirt.

While we're on the subject, something always bothered me. Boober is always washing socks, but we never see the Fraggles wearing socks! lol I think the only one I ever saw was Traveling Matt.

I'll betcha Boober has only one pair of socks that he washes over and over again. :)

Switching back to silly creatures for a moment, the Fraggles didn't even know about them (that I'm aware of) until Uncle Matt went out into outerspace. I would assume everyone would refer to them by what the discoverer would nickname them, same as we might name some new discovery ourselves.

I'm thinking that long, long ago Doozers, Gorgs, Fraggles, and the other creatures knew what human beings were. Infact I am willing to bed the the legendary "Sir Hubris" was in actuality a human being.
However for reasons unknown something happened to the humanity that lived in the Fraggle Rock world and they all, but disappeared. There might be legends about creatures called "human beings", but the Fraggles, including Convincing John, have no clue that these human beings and the "Silly Creatures" are one and the same. If it is true that Sir Hubris was a man who gave the power to rule the universe then you could see why Fraggle History may have had a negative view of human beings.

Speaking from a production standpoint, you have to remember that that episode was one of the very first, when most of the show's continuity standpoints had not yet been established (including possibly just how much the Fraggles knew about the outside world).

As for Boober's socks, it's possible that he never wears them, just washes them over and over because the repetitive action of laundering is therapeutic for him.

Oh, I realize that. I'm kinda keen on the whole film-makin' process. ;) I was pretty much just wondering if they'd ever looked back on that episode, realized what he said, and tried to explain it somehow... if even by just having another Fraggle refer to "human beings".

Well, as for the "human beings," I believe neither John nor the fraggles knew or understood what they were. John had probably just heard of them somewhere, and through his powers of persuasion, convinced them that they were something terrible.
As for VBoober and the socks, I believe he just keeps a bunch of them for the fun of washing them. Who knows? Maybe they're Doc's lost socks that Sprocket relocates on him.

Fragglemuppet, I'm inclined to agree with you on that one. In fact, that's exactly the kind of in-universe explanation I was looking for. Nobody can resist the PoP!

Pickles be an ancient and simple food. If they're raiding the gorgs' garden for radishes, who says they don't pickle them for later (The Great Radish Famine notwithstanding)? Pickles don't necessarily = cucumbers (I have pickled onions, garlic, and ginger in my fridge at the moment, as well as a load of cukes.)

...Of course, you're right about the other anachronisms and inconsistencies. Just wanted to point that out.

Yeah I know what you mean about the pickles. I was just trying to remember anachronisms I'd heard off the top of my head. :)
