View Full Version : Coke & Pepsi: Is it just me?

What I said earlier, about coke and Pepsi (see my Media posers rant). I just can't tell the difference. If you give me a fizzing black liquid (provided it IS soda) I couldn't tell what it is. It could be Coke, Pepsi, or even Royal Crown or Generic Cola. I can't tell the stinking difference. This will drive me crazy! Anyone esle not know the difference?

One (Coke) is a little sweeter than the other. I usd to feel the same way untilI lived with this friend of mine who drank pepsi (and Idrank Coke. ran out of coke. And thought what's the differece? had one of his Pepsi's and found the difference. It's not major but it is there. I think some people are more susceptible to the difference than others. I dunno.

Pepsi is watered down and has more fizz. I can tell the difference and am not a happy camper when I'm not served Coke.

Yeah. But I heard that drinking soda can strip the calcium from your bones (probably the distilled water, and chemicals and such). Man. Nothing is safe anymore!

I'm a Dr. Pepper kinda guy myself, although in recent years my nerves are getting worse, so I pretty much avoid all caffeine now. Every now and then I'll have just ONE can and sip it for hours.
At least it's dark and caffein-y:)

Put a T-Bone steak in Coke for 3 days, and it disintegrates....so I've been told. Of the two, I like Pepsi better, not as sweet.
Coke, though, can do wonders for cleaning your car's motor, windows, getting bug guts off the front of your studebacher...
Coke kills. That's their next logo. Although, as far as cleaning agents go, it's the best tasting. Windex just plain makes my tummy ache.
Also, I'm a root beer fanatic, especially with chocolate chip cookies or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

I used to be a Pepsi freak. Seriously, I really loved it. My friend (whose Grampa used to work for Pepsi) and I would go around campaigning for Pepsi, making little home-made commercials for their products and writing songs about it and stuff. Once I spotted a parked Coke delivery truck with its window down and I dropped in a note that basically said that Coke was doomed and Pepsi would soon overtake them. Gosh I was stupid! Oh well. Even if it did rob a few years of my life, I still like Pepsi a thousand times more than coke.

I was always a Coca-cola drinker until I developed a corn allergy (corn syrup) and switched to Diet Coke (that stuff is toxic, people). When drinking Diet Coke, I noticed little differnce with that and Diet Pepsi as they both kind of numb your tounge. I then swithed to Pepsi One which is much tastier! A couple of years ago I quit that too and I have felt so much better! Nutrasweet and artificial sweetenters are evil. I used to get stomach cramps from that stuff and didn't realize 'till I stopped drinking it. There is trace arsenic in Nutrasweet afterall.
Just my thoughts
Personally, I can't stand either one, and that goes for any form of carbonated (or alcoholic) beverage. It's like pouring battery acid down your throat.
I've always believed that all the cola companies are in some vast conspiracy with the world's goverments to control all humanity. God only knows what (highly addictive) mind-control drugs they lace their "secret formulas" with..all designed to keep us nice and complacement..
I can figure out no other reason why million of people would STAND that swill otherwise.

does anybody remember back in the early and mid 90's there was a test to see if you could figure out which was coke and which was pepsi and if you got it right they gave you a pepsi one card? (or something by that name)
also isn't dr. pepper made with cough syrup, or is that coke or pepsi? it's one of those three.

Anyone remember Crystal Clear Pepsi? A few years ago my friend found a 2 liter of it in her basement...must have been forgotten about in the early-mid 90s (whenever they made that stuff). You could see that over time it had seperated into a watery section on top and a heavy syrupy section on the bottom. Not as tasty, thirst quenching sight.....certainly made me think twice the next time someone offered me a soda.

Crystal Pepsi - ick. Remember when they had other ones, too, like blueberry and strawberry I think? I remember they had these commercials with a rap about it. Home-made sodas must taste WAY better than commercial stuff! Is that basically like Italian sodas?
Between Coke and Pepsi, I prefer Pepsi (but NOT Pepsi Blue-that stuff is nasty) I used to like Coke, but had to quit drinking it because it was giving me stomach problems from all the acidity, and then somone told me that plumbers use Coke syrup to unclog drains...*eek*
I really like Dr. Pepper, and those Hansen's Natural Sodas, although lately, I have been trying to drink more water.

I'm not completely sure which you mean by Italian sodas. Home-made soda is so far superior to any commercial sodas out there that there's no comparison at all. Your ingredients are all fresh, all natural, and there are zero additives such as high-fructose corn syrup, etc. Plus you bottle in glass, in which flavor is always superior.
I make sodas, beers, tabascos, wines, cordials, liqueurs, ketchups, all kinds of stuff, just for us, and for friends. I'd love to do these recipes commercially but haven't the proper facilities to be licensed for it. But it's fun, and so much better than store-bought.

Italian sodas are basically a flavored syrup (or mix, if you're adventurous) mixed up with carbonated soda water...but it sounds like your home-made stuff is even better than that!

I'm not allowed to have any sort of caffeinated soda, due to health issues. (I do have a sip now and then though!) Which is OK because I love Sprite, but my Zoology teacher (who just happens to be the anatomy teacher as well) told our class that it takes 75 minutes of aerobics to work off one 20 ounce pop....so I sort of quit...now I'm into herbal tea....with a spoonfull of Splenda....YUM!
Now for my opinion on Dark pops.....I like Pepsi and Coca-Cola, but I slightly like Pepsi better...and Dr. Pepper is nasty *blech* but most people here live off of it!
but I love to find a soda fountain with sprite that just has enough syrup to keep it from tasting like carbonated water *again BLECH!*
but that Mountain Dew Livewire stuff was goooood....I'm glad it was only available over the summer, or else my health would be in trouble! :D

I really don't like cokes (that's what we call all sodas down in the south, right Fozzie?) I'd rather just drink water. Yeah, I'm boring like Bert. Well, not that boring. Anyway, I maybe drink a glass of coke maybe every couple of months, either because it goes just so darn good with pizza, or my throat is sore and a carbonated drink makes it feel better. My favorite? RC Cola!

I don't like most American sodas; Pepsi and Coke are both nasty...so are all their other horrid types, Mountain Dew and such. I don't really drink soda in general, if I do, I usually like Japanese sodas...they're better tasting, more natural, less highly colored, and more attractively packaged. I'm a sucker for Ramune. Calpis soda and CC Lemon are also awesome!! Anyone ever heard of these? Fanta is also popular, they have a lot more flavors too! American-wise, I don't mind the occasional Sunkist, Cherry 7-Up or Squirt. But that's basically it. And if I HAD to choose a cola, it would definitely be RC. ;)

*laughs* we call 'em either that or Pop in Oklahoma!
To continue this discussion from 2002 (it is SOOOO wierd reading back what you wrote years ago) you can definitely tell the difference with most generic colas although some are close. I prefer Pepsi, i used to be more into Caffeine Free Diet Coke (fizzier) but they stopped making that here. I'm starting to get into Cherry Coke, which seems to be making a comeback here. I couldn't stand it the first time around though for some strange reasons.
I've never had Mountain Dew, i guess its like Sprite or something.
I can definately tell the difference between coke and pepsi, and personally I like coke better. I like vanilla coke the best though. YUM

I'll drink whatever. Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, Mountain Dew, 7-Up, gasoline...er...wait. Scratch that last one.
Coke is sweeter and has a little more "bite" to it than Pepsi.
Although I find Diet Pepsi sweeter than Diet Coke. Go figure!
I'd say Mountain Dew is sweeter than either Sprite or 7-Up. Actually, I don't know what Mountain Dew is supposed to be...probably some bizarre mix of chemicals that make you temporarily all-powerful, like in the commercials.
Hey, I can dirt-bike off a cliff, float through the air, drop 1, 256 feet, and still land on my two wheels, as long as I'm guzzling a can of Mountain Dew! Yeeeeeeeee-haaaaaaaaaaaw!
Actually, I don't drink much soda. I don't dislike it, I just drink a lot of water.
Never tried that experiment, where you put a tooth in a glass of cola, and it will eventually dissolve. I never had a spare tooth around...:zany:

I remember an old commerical from when Pepsi changed their can. Two little boys see Cindy Crawford getting out of a car, and the song "Just One Look" is playing. The boys are mezmorized as Cindy gets a Pepsi from the machine. Then they say:

"It's beautiful..."

Yeah, I drink a variety of things other then soft drink and don't drink them that often. I actually think Pepsi taste sweeter, but I've never understood those people who couldn't tell the difference of one from the other. Actually, Mountain dew is a citrus drink, but I think it's more grapefruitish then Mellow, but that could be just me. My economics teacher did this before, but I never got a turn. But it you blindfold me and give me cups with Pepsi, Coke, and bootleg-a-cola, and ask me to identify each one, I would be able to successfully tell you. But I'm sure that's probably not all that difficult:smirk: .

Yup, I sure remember that commercial.
How 'bout the Pepsi ads that starred Michael J. Fox?
Or the ones with Ray Charles, when someone swipes his Pepsi for Coke: "All right, who's the wise guy?"
Then there was Batman and Indiana Jones shilling Diet Coke.
And the (Coke?) commercials with Art Carney and the kid who played the youngest son on Family Ties.
Vanilla Coke is pretty good.
Pepsi is a little more "syrupy" I think than Coke; Coke has a more natural cola flavor, IMO.
But yeah, I could take a blind taste-test, and tell the difference between colas.

Yeah, we thought Jolt was awesome, because it had TWICE the caffeine of Coke! I was maybe 10 or 11 when I first tried it (it debuted in '85). To make it extra appealing to us knuckleheads on the playground, most of our parents wouldn't let us drink it, and our school actually prohibited anyone bringing it for lunch. Of course, the older guys would drink it on the school bus, or at the park, so we saw it as a status symbol.
Innocent time indeed!;)

Yeah, I agree with you there.
I think Pepsi's sweeter. I don't mind either, but I think I'm a Coke girl! I dig the vanilla flavoured one, too. Cherry's nice, too. Does anyone remember the lemon-flavoured Pepsi? yeah I remember, Pepsi with lemon twist, hehe. My sister liked it but I agree with you kiki. I couldn't taste the lemon enough.
Coke~ TO ACIDIC! leaves a nastyness in my mouth & throat about 10 minutes after I drink it. that is if I make it to the end of the can.
Diet Coke~ I'm a die hard DIET COKE fan. Not so much with the one with the lime in it tho.
Diet Coke Plus~ Anyone tried this one yet? They added Vitamines & Minerals to it & it tastes too much like reg coke for my tastes.
Pepsi~ TOO SWEET!

Do they have a Christmas flavor? I know Coke, Sprite and Pepsi put out bottles with special holiday labels, but the taste is the same. I don't know about Sierra Mist.
But yeah, I think it is Mountain Dew that puts out special "summer only" flavored soft drinks.

Yeah, I think some brands of soda (Mountain Dew?) put out a "summer only" flavor for a few months... Well, that particular flavor I had during the school year, because I was at school when I first heard about it. Maybe it was near the summer season? but it came out around the same time as their more permanent cherry flavor. But yeah, like Live Wire or something like that, which was available only for a limit of time which was the summer of something or the other. But I saw it around was after that.
Do they have a Christmas flavor? I know Coke, Sprite and Pepsi put out bottles with special holiday labels, but the taste is the same. I don't know about Sierra Mist. Yeah, Pepsi put out this spice flavor during the Christmas season, and it's pretty good. I though that Sierra Mist cranberry flavor was their holiday one.

Yeah, that's what is was; they had a commercial where Michael Ian Black and Jim Gaffigan were sitting on a street-side bench, and Jim askes Michael what he's drinking, and he tells him it's the cranberry flavored Sierra Mist, and that it came out only once a year "just like the holiday hawk." Jim said there was no such thing, next thing you know there's a hawk sitting on top of his head singing "Jingle Bells".

Anything with carbonation makes me throw up, so I wouldn't be able to tell the different between Coke or Pepsi either, because one sip of either and I start gagging.
OMG! I thought that was just me! The only way I can drink anything carbonated is if it's in a bottle w/ a lid to shake out the fizz. I don't have soda pop that often because of this little chore.

There's a Jolly Ranchers soft drink?
Whoa!
HEY! Did you know that you can turn KOOL-AID into soda pop?
Just make KOOL-AID according to pkg directions then (if you're underage, get the help of an adult).
Then add a few chunks of dried ice! Careful it will bubble & boil over if you add too much too fast
I get mine at my local HYVEE grocer. It'll add carbonation to the drink not to mention who wouldn't want to drink something that has an eery fog rolling off of the top of it? Very Mad Scientist! Also works with some fruit juices, depending on your tastes.
OH! And if you add fruit to the mix & let it sit for a little bit the carbonation will start to get absorbed by the fruit. When you eat the fruit it get's all tingly on your tongue! Pineapple, oranges, strawberries & watermelon's are the best! I usually do this sort of thing when I have BBQ's and small social functions & Holiday parties.
Just thought I'd share.

I actually read that they actually discontinued the life Savers one because even though it did well in taste test, consumers thought it would taste to much like a liquid version of the candy. I remember it, and it was actually very good.
But Jolly Ranchers soft drink it kinda hard to find. I think they just released the 'fire red' flavor. People have found it at local convenience stores like 7-11 and things. But I know that wholesale places sell them by the case. Very strong carbonation, very good! Yum!

People always assume I'm much younger than I look...that's because I have a picture in my closet aging in place of me, muwhahahahahaha!
Seriously, people do tend to think I'm younger than I look. I recently went to a Mexican restaurant that served alcoholic beverages, and the guy at the door wouldn't let me in unless I showed him my driver's license! I got carded going into a restaurant!
