Hey Guys,
Im gonna attempt to make a Fraggle, Wozza Fraggle infact !
What do you think is best, Sculpting a head or using sheets of foam to build it ?
Can you recomend a certain type of Foam ?
What about the hair ?
How would you make long hair with Ostrich Feathers ?
And what about Patterns, anyone got any good ones ?
Any help will be much appreciated !!
Thanks

I made a Mokey and a Boober Pattern and they work really well.
What Fraggle are you going to make?

Yeah id love to see the Patterns and pics of how they turned out !
I attempted my first Fraggle head yesterday, It was real good, Except for being too small.
So im gonna just make another Puppet using that head, And then try the Fraggle again.
But atleast now i know how to make the shape with 1/2 foam sheets.
My Fraggles head is gonna be about the same shape as Mokey, Mabe a bit longer like Cantus'.
Thanks !!

Hi Warrick,
Ideally, I'd suggest using sheets of 3/4" foam (scott foam is best, but the regular stuff for upholstry is OK too) they can be glued together using contact cement gel (I recommend LePage's Premium contact cement). Some people also use Barge. Make sure you have a respirator with the proper filters if you are using contact cement though and don't forget to wear latex gloves.
If you don't want to use contact cement I know some people just hot glue foam together but I don't like this method.

In response to Buckbeavers post Warrick the best English equivalent to these glues is Impact, made by Evostick, but make sure you don't use the solvent free type.
Scott foam supplier in London is Pentonville Rubber Company, Pentonville Road (nr Kings X).
re Patterns, you could try making one yourself, from profile and front on drawings of the puppet.
Best,
James

The fraggles are cool to do replicas of cause they are identifiable as a "species" but you can mix and match colors and designs for a unique character. Please post pics of your finished fraggle. I'd love to see it.
One thing that I noticed about the fraggles that is not necessarily a given when making a puppet is that they don't really seem to have any mouth board. Basically the structure of the mouth is just the foam and fabric, so the puppeteer can not only open and close the mouth, but bend and twist it in any number of ways. Like Kermit's mouth. This seems to be consistent with all of the main fraggles and all of the others that I've seen. Just something to keep in mind.

they have plates in thier mouths, trust me, they just a re a little different from others, they were designed to be very flexible, and allow movment, with out a mouth plate of somekind, u would end up with a mouth that never looks fully closed, like on some of those cheesey ministry puppets or education puppets out thier

Got it. But basically what I'm saying is there is no rigidity to the mouth. Good to know construction wise though RavageFrackle.

Please do Sir Didymus. I am going to try my hand at a unique Fraggle (my next project) with Boober's head, Red's body, and Wembley's legs (all blue of course, as Boober is my fave).
My other project idea is a Muppet a la Grover OR Cookie Monster, with Rick Lyon's vacuuform eyeballs and in the style of the Avenue Q puppets. Does anybodee know about a place I can find a vacuuform eyeball tutorial on the Interweb? Also, I like the style of the Avenue Q puppets and was wondering if they were coming out with a Behind The Scenes book like the musical WICKED is on Oct. 21. Hope I get a response soon!

You could always buy the Sababa plush and unseam them, and then make a larger pattern. :excited:

So the mouth plates just help keep the mouth's shape.
Those are the scariest Fraggles I have ever seen!

<<Those are the scariest Fraggles I have ever seen!>>
No kidding! When I was young, I had lots of grand schemes. I was always planning plays and puppet shows based on my favorite characters, and they almost always required complex recreations of these characters. I was learning to draw, and figured if I could draw a good Mickey Mouse, so why couldn't I make a great Kermit or Fozzie Puppet? Well my one roadblock was that I really couldn't sew. But my Grandma could. She quickly became the first person I consulted with on any project. If I needed a costume or a puppet she was enlisted to figure out the practicalities- I was an idea man. There was only one little problem. Her standards weren't quite as high as mine. So when we set out to make something, frequently what she thought was good enough, wasn't good enough for me. When we tried to make Fozzie, any brown fur fabric was fine for her, even if it was a light brown hairy fur and not nappy mustard like Fozzie. I always appreciated her help- I mean she was doing all the work and for nothing- they just weren't what was in my head. Anyway those Fraggles look like something that she would have been totally happy with, while I would have been trying to get her to change the pattern to make it work.

Does anyone have a fraggle pattern other than the scary german pattern?
Is it a foam pattern. I've like to see one if anyone has one.
Thanks John

I found a web site that is supposed to translate the text, I typed out the german information word for word and tried to translate instructions 1 and instructions 2 most of it got translated not everything, there are still some words, I can not figure out but got most of it done. I just do not know how accurate it is. So I would like the instructions too.

Hi, I would also be very grateful for a fraggle pattern, how well does the german one make up, or is it really a beginner shape? Many thanks for all the info, just found out I have MS so doing all I can to keep busy and I live love puppets!!

Well I'm Dutch and not German :) And my German is really bad. But luckily the two languages have alot in common. So I've managed to translate the pattern info for those who are interrested. The last sentence just doesn't make any sense to me at all. I doubt it matters though. One picture simply gives some advice on sewing while the other is an example of how to make hair. I only translated the info for the pattern parts:
Pattern Explanations for the Fraggle Puppets:
1) Head
2) Hair
3) Upper lip
4) Lower lip (make a copy of the tongue from this part)
5) Arms
6) Leg with predrawn cut for the foot
7) Body front
8) Body back
Red's Dress:
9) Front and back
Gobo's Pullover:
10) Front and back
11) Arms
Wembley's Blouse:
12) Front
13) Back
14) Sound collar
Boober's Cap and Scarf:
15) Cap screen
16) Cap cover
Mokey's Jacket:
17) Front
18) Back
19) Arms
The cut-divide can be found on tinker-bent B  (edit: I think it's a refference to the full scale pattern in another part of the magazine)
That's all :) Hope you all have fun with it.
