The last movie I watched was the Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. I had seen it at Christmas time but my fiance didn't, so I made him watch it with me. It's funny, but kind of off the wall. We like movies that are more off the wall though, so it's ok.

Isn't that transformation just crazy? Watching him in a role like Mystic River then going back and watching Fast Times it is very humorous to compare him then and now.

Yeah "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" was a fun comedy I liked from the early 80's. I also really liked the Steve Martin movies of the early 80's ("The Jerk" [1979 actually], "The Man With Two Brains", "The Lonely Guy", and "All of Me"). Well last evening I watched "All of Me". First time I saw it since back then. I picked that one up and "The Lonely Guy" in a discount dvd bin in a department store. Enjoyed it a lot once again. Steve Martin steals the show, of course. He has a lot of hilarious one liners like, "Good plan!" and "the little fireman", but his physical humor is the best thing. Lily Tomlin plays a woman who ends up inside Steve Martin's body and controls half of it. Martin is absolutely incredible at how he can manuever his body in scenes where Tomlin is trying to go the opposite direction that he wants to. It's both hilarious and amazing to watch. This time I thought of Jim Carrey in "The Mask" (Carrey's wild movements and energy). Other than Carrey, I don't think anyone else could have pulled off those "All of Me" scenes like Steve Martin did.

Steve Martin is truly a genius. I have the SNL Best of Steve Martin, and his appearance on TMS is one of my favorites. I also really like Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (a Frank Oz film). His playing the role of Michael Caine's "special" brother is absolutely unforgettable.

I was in the middle of watching Don Juan Demarco today. From what I've seen, it looks promising.

I also recently saw The Life and Death of Peter Sellers. I realized when watching it that I've never seen any of the Pink Panthers all the way through (though according to TLADOPS Sellers hated the films). If TLADOPS is accurate, then he was actually a huge jerk who may deserve accolades for his comedy and acting but certainly not for his personal and behind-the-scenes behavior. I was inspired to go out and rent Pink Panther just to finally be able to say I've seen it.

Ooh, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, I love love LOVE that movie. When I went to New York, I got to see the musical version, and I was flipping out as I was already a huge fan of the movie. Well, lemme tell you, the musical is HILARIOUS! Great and funny music.

As for the Pink Panther, I've seen it SO many times, but never the end. I always fall asleep before the end!!

Yes I really liked that movie a lot too. Caine is a great actor too so we get two wonderful actors in a very entertaining movie. LOVED that ending scene with Caine and Martin watching (in astonishment) the plane flying away! "Planes,Trains and Automobiles" with Martin and Candy was also superb. But there's something about the style of Martin's earliest movies that appeals to me the most of all.
And yes that was neat that Frank Oz directed "Scoundrels". What an amazing multi-talented man he is. He directed other really good movies too, like "The Indian in the Cupboard" (loved hearing his cameo of the principal on the school speaker system), "What about Bob?" and the remake of "Little Shop of Horrors". By the way, "Little Shop of Horrors" was always a good pick-me-up movie for me. And Steve Martin has that awesome "I am a dentist" song in it! :)

Docnzhoss
07-17-2005, 08:08 PM
I forgot all about that whole scene! Definitely the most memorable in the whole movie, I think. I agree with you about Martin's earliest films, though. The Jerk will always remain one of the greatest comedies ever made.

I guess that does bring me to this question, though:
Is there a Director's Cut version of The Jerk on DVD? I've thought about it but have never seen one. I've seen a version on TV that has a lot more charity seekers such as one who wants to buy an iceberg and one who wants leather seats in his plane because he currently has to cover his seats with towels (Steve's reaction to this news is howlingly funny, as I recall). Every video I have seen does not include these scenes, though.

Hey, MrsPepper, who starred in the musical? I never knew it existed.

Ziffel

Not sure about a director's cut version of "The Jerk" on dvd. I don't have that movie on dvd yet but was looking at Amazon and see that it was released on dvd in 2002 and interestingly is due to be released again July 26th, called "The Jerk-26th anniversary edition". It says this version is in widescreen and has these extras:

Heehee, DRS was just on tv earlier! What a coincidence. ;)

The musical stars John Lithgow as Michael Caine's character, and Norbert Leo Butz as Freddy. The Janet character (I believe the character's name is different in the musical, but I can't remember) is played by Sherie Rene Scott, and she does a wonderful job. Her singing voice is amazing.
I'd recommend for anyone who likes the movie to get the musical soundtrack, it sounds alot like hotel/elevator music to keep the feel, but it's catchy and beautiful. The lyrics are hilarious, too.
Also, Andre has a bigger role, and so does Muriel (the woman who thinks Michael Caine is a prince). They end up hooking up (Muriel and Andre) and it is just amazingly funny! Seriously, get the soundtrack. Or just listen to the clips on amazon.

Great film. A visual treat and the great "Candy Man" song. The new one is getting good reviews and I'm sure with Tim Burton directing it is also a visual feast for the eyes. I love Burton's original style so much.
Late last night I decided to watch the other Steve Martin dvd movie I bought, "The Lonely Guy", before going to sleep. I watched it then fell asleep, then put it back to where I was last awake and watched some more then fell asleep. Then finally finished it! I loved it once again (I only fell asleep because of being so tired!). When I saw it originally on HBO in 1984 I watched it after midnight so I thought it'd be fun to see it this way again. It's very funny, Steve Martin is great, and the premise about lonely guys is appealing to me since I can kinda relate. Plus, Charles Grodin is (as always) superb in this movie as another lonely guy.

Empire Records is such a great movie. "Warren's" character cracks me up.

I just finished Million Dollar Baby. Geez, what a terrific movie. It was a downer, but not near as bad as Clint Eastwood's previous flick, Mystic River. I now understand why MDB won all those Oscars. Clint, Morgan Freeman and Hillary Swank all did wonderful jobs.

Last evening I watched "Unlawful Entry" with Ray Liotta and Kurt Russell. Anyone seen this? I've seen it a couple times before. In subject matter it's not exactly an original plot but I thought this one was very well done and well acted. I like suspense thrillers like this, Misery, Single White Female, Alfred Hitchcock movies, etc. I think Ray Liotta is a good actor too. Liked him in "Dominick and Eugene" and "Something Wild", which were both excellent movies.

I'm watching Amadeus on dvd right now.Last movie I looked at lastly was Talk Radio, with Eric Bogosian, one of Oliver Stone's finest.

Ray Liotta was also great in Goodfellas,NARC & Kurt Russell great in Silkwood(that performance made me appreciate his work even more).I've be a long-time fan of Alfred Hitchcock's,first movie I got to see of his was Dial 'M' for Murder in 3D,when I was 13(in the theater). There's a terrific Alfred Hitchcock attraction down in Universal Studios Orlando, showing how the shower scene in Psycho & the carousel scene in Strangers on a Train were filmed. My favorite Hitchcock films are: Dial 'M' for Murder,The Birds,Rear Window,Strangers on a Train,Shadow of a Doubt and North by Northwest.

Fast Times at Ridgemont,I bought the video cheap($2.99),it's a great time-warp of a flick;to see all of those actors in their early career(Nic Cage,Sean Penn,Forest Whitaker) plus a fab soundtrack too.

I'm pretty sure I've seen Unlawful Entry, was very good.Suspense thrillers are the best, aren't they, keeping you on the edge of your seat;either mystery thrillers or horror thrillers, written well. The best suspense films are with gratuitous violence,Hitchcock for example;using camera tricks, music, actors reactions, and your imagination to create a morsel/gem of a movie.

Steve Martin is terrific.His roles in DRS,L.A. Story,All of Me,The Jerk,Roxanne,My Blue Heaven,Planes Trains & Automobiles,Father of the Bride,Little Shop of Horror,Three Amigos,Grand Canyon & Parenthood..were all note worthy.

I really liked this movie a lot too. I've seen it about 3 times. It's always interesting and compelling throughout. I love the scenes where Barry Champlain engages in combat radio with the callers. Also love that whole lengthy scene where that guest sits in with him. Great voice he had!
"Talk Radio" seems to be one of those movies, like "Unlawful Entry", that a surpringly high number of people have not seen. Two other fantastic movies that people seldom say they've seen are "Dominick and Eugene" and "Sling Blade."

Not long ago I rewatched my favorite Rob Reiner movie, "Stand By Me", and rewatched a great suspense thriller with Ray Liotta. "Unlawful Entry". Well last night I rewatched my other favorite Reiner movie which is also a great suspense thriller - "Misery". Outstanding film! Loved every scene (though the infamous sledgehammer scene was hard, as always, to stomach!). The pacing and editing were so magnificent. And Kathy Bates was amazing. I can clearly see why she won the best actress Oscar for her performance in this movie. So many fantastic and memorable scenes, but I guess my favorite would be the one where Paul Sheldon is exploring around her house and hears the sound of her truck pulling up and desperately tries to get back to his bed before she comes in the house. Oooh the tension as the camera switches back and forth many times between Paul and her! Even though I KNOW what ends up happening the scene still has me on edge every time I see it.

I've seen these movies Ziffel, both are great.Tom Hulce & Ray Liotta are so unappreciated as actors. This movie is heartwarming and compelling;along with Jamie Lee Curtis, very sentimental.Sling Blade, hard to believe that's Billy Bob Thorton in that role;been a fan of his ever since.

The movies I watched today were: Dr. Strangelove...,Pink Floyd-The Wall,The English Patient & first half of Pulp Fiction.

Glad you liked "Dominick and Eugene", Janice. One of the best dramas I've ever seen. It is indeed heartwarming and extremely well acted by all three. How about that scene with Tom Hulce where he was on the job collecting the garbage and the camera zooms in on his face for a long time as he is horrified at discovering what that abusive father did. Only one word to describe that performance: WOW.
And did you like "Misery", Janice? Or was the subject matter too disturbing and intense for you? I guess as great a movie it is, it's not recommended for the squeamish!

Glad you really liked "Misery" also, Dee. :) "My ceramic penguin always faces due south." Very chilling yet delicious line there. And yeah the hobbling operation of the Kimberly Diamond mines. Such a great movie. And big credit to Stephen King too, of course, for writing the book, including that hobbling part. Some people don't realize that "The Shawshank Redemption", "Stand By Me", and "Misery" were works of his. I've read quite a few King stories but never did read "Misery." I'm going to get the book now though. This sentence from film critic Leonard Maltin has me intrigued:

"There was much more nuance, and more interesting development of the relationship between fan and prisoner, in the novel."

I love King's writing style and think he does a particularly good job with dialogue between two people. So I'm looking forward to it!

Oh and I liked this humorous line from the movie by Paul Sheldon:
"When I said I wanted a snack I kind of had in mind the cheese and crackers kind of thing."

Jaws, great movie there. Lots of great lines from that movie, superbly acted by the three leads, and,of course, an unforgetable and awesome John Williams dihdih dihdih dihdih dihdih music theme for the shark. One thing I love to do every time i watch this movie is pause the scene where we get a look at the great white for the first time (as it suddenly emerges from the water and Brody sees it first). That is so cool. It takes up the whole screen.

My favourite part of Jaws is when the dude (not Richard Dreyfuss, oh I forget the chatacer's name, haven't seen Jaws in years) is on the beach, and the kid on the yellow floatie is being attacked by the shark. Then they do that camera shot (I was taught in a tech class that it is now known as the Jaws Shot) where they zoom in while panning out (or vice versa), and it gives you that really cool effect like the background is moving. It's hard to describe, but I think most of you know what part I mean. Now its a classic shot.

The Aurora pulling out from the harbor,as scene through the shark mouth

They both have great action, great villains, great special effects, great acting from the leads (Tobey Macguire and Kirsten Dunst), and great direction. I watched "Hotel Rwanda" (2004) this evening, a true story film about the mass genocide in Rwanda in 1994 that killed almost a million people. Tough film to watch at times, but mainly due to the subject matter and knowing this really happened. It's not real gratuitous; we usually see the aftermath of the violence rather then killing scenes in progress. Still very sad, of course. And very well made and superbly acted by the star, Don Cheadle. He is in the movie almost every second. He plays a real life hero who helped saved a lot of lives in the midst of the mass slaughter. I usually like lightweight, fun entertaining movies to relax with but once in a while I love a serious, important, well-done true story movie. This one hits the bullseye for that.

Well as I mentioned, one of my favorite movies, "Dial M for Murder" was on PBS this weekend. I have it on dvd and vhs already so didn't watch it on tv. But felt like watching it again so last evening watched my dvd. I highly highly recommend it to any of you who have never seen it. I'm sure you'll thoroughly enjoy it. Great Hitchcock film (as many of his are). Ray Milland as the star character and villian is great in this and it's fasinating how "quick on his feet" he is with excuses and talking his way out of things. "Psycho" is probably about the only Hitchcock movie I liked better than this one.

By the way, perhaps some of you have seen the partial remake of this movie, "A Perfect Murder" with Michael Douglas and Gwyneth Paltrow (1998).
That was a good movie too and I liked how it wasn't just a scene for scene remake with different actors (as the silly remake of "Psycho" from 1998 with Vince Vaughn was), but had a lot of new and different things to it.

I'm a big Hitchcock fan.My dad, brother and I got to see 'Dial M for Murder' in 3-D in the movie theater.I own this on video, along with several other movies by Hitch.A great attraction at Universal Studios Florida,is a tribute to Hitchcock. In it,it shows how the shower scene of 'Psycho' was filmed, the carousel scene of 'Strangers on a Train' was made, and the 3-D scene of 'Dial 'M''.I've been to this show many times, and have taken my roomate.A great learning experience!

The last movie(s) I watched yesterday were: 'Some Like It Hot','Fiddler on the Roof',and 'Jesus Christ Superstar'.

I just can't say enough how fascinated I was with the Milland performance and Tony Wendice character in "Dial M For Murder". His slipperyness and cunningness were frequent and amazing. Last evening watched "Jaws" (the original) again. Always a big pleasure. Then watched "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" again. I saw it about 20 years ago for my first time and this was my second viewing. Just as back then, I really didn't enjoy it so much. But I do think it was an outstanding movie. Just find it not so fun to watch because of the sadistic nurse and some other meanness from patients to each other and the coldness and meanness of the entire institutional staff in general. Nicholson is great in it and has a few funny lines though. And love that Charley Cheswick character!
I'm sure just about everyone who has seen it would agree that it is a great movie. But is there anyone else who also, like me, didn't really have fun while watching it?
An example of a movie from the other side of the coin (a movie that is not so good but provides some stupid funny humor is "Police Academy" [and the many sequels, which were even dumber]. "Cuckoo's Nest" was a much better made and acted movie. But I'd rather watch "Police Academy" in terms of having a good time. Interesting little paradox there. :p
Actually, it's kind of like "Schindler's List". I never saw that movie but my brother said it was excellent but that he would never wish to see it again because you feel so bad.

JaniceFerSure
12-04-2005, 04:51 PM
Watching 'World According to Garp'.Hello Ziffel, missed seeing you here at MC.I love Cuckoo's Nest, very well done movie.I love movies that challenge my emotions: 'Cuckoo's Nest' even 'Schindler's List' aka tear jerkers. I love any movie that makes me: laugh,cry,angry,etc..part of being human.

Ziffel
12-04-2005, 05:36 PM
Will you still need me will you still feed me when I'm 64?!

Garp I saw in the theater in "82 and once or twice since then but not since the 80's. That'd be a fun one to rewatch. Rather bizarre at times but overall entertaining.

Hi Janice and thank you. As for "Cuckoo's Nest", I also enjoy movies that are tear jerkers (like the sleeper "Dominck and Eugene" is one of my all time favorrite dramas and is a tear jerker). But "Cuckoo's Nest" didn't make me cry at all. Rather, I had a kind of unpleasant and sick feeling throughout as we see how cold as dry ice Nurse Ratched and the staff in general are to the well being of the patients. When Billy commits suicide as a result of her cruel mind games and she says, "Well let's just get back to our normal routine" I wanted to reach in the tv set and grab her like McMurphy did!
I guess the thing is, I like serious movies and sad, tear jerker movies (both fictional and true story based) but I DON'T like too much sadism and people being mean. Like I thought "The Elephant Man" was a superb movie. But I don't ever wish to watch the scene again where the sadistic people torment the poor guy for about five minutes. That stuff really gets to me.

Blackenstein!

It's a total B-movie from the 70's starring B-movie legend, who also played TV's Lone Ranger, John Hart. It came out after the success of Blackula, another black exploitation movie, and tried to follow in it's wake... but failed. Oh so miserably. Though you gotta love little cinematic gems like this. Well I haven't watched a movie since last week's "Midnight Run" (been a lot of football lately, plus my dvds of Green Acres and now All in the Family season 5!) but just noticed in the TV Guide a movie called "Killer Bees" from 2002 is on tonight and the description says, "A swarm of killer bees attacks a rural town." Seems like ever since "The Swarm" (1978) the movies have been buzzing with these type of movies. Throughout the 80's and 90's I have seen several movies with the same ol' thing - swarms of killer bees attacking people of a small town. And they all seem to get low ratings from the critics. Guess the film makers are interested in making "b" movies!
Well, not sure what the next movie will be that I watch, but perhaps I should watch the classic "The Sting". yuk yuk yuk yuk!

Been quite a while since I watched any movies until this past Friday night I watched Charles Bronson in "Ten to Midnight", a fairly good Dirty Harry/Death Wish type movie. And then after that watched one of my all time favorites again, Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho". Love that Bernard Herrmann music! Love that Anthony Perkins performance! Love that house and motel!

You probably mean the remake of "The Producers" and not the original 1968 version, right DanDan? The original was great, but I haven't seen the remake.

Last evening I watched "Indecent Proposal" (1993). First time I saw it since back then. This time it was a lot harder to watch, due to my recent break-up with my ex-fiance. When Demi and Woody were together and declaring their undying love for each other it was sad thinking of my loss. We used to tell each other that we were permanently each other's too. But the toughest scenes to watch were when Redford kept trying to steal Demi's heart (the creep was only supposed to spend that one night with her and then be gone) and when Demi eventually does fall for him and kisses him. The three leads did a good job and the movie did come up with a very interesting and thought-provoking premise with in-depth aftermaths and consequences of the decisions of Demi and Woody. But again, very maddening and tough to see in spots, primarily because of my tough loss. And then last night I dreamed a LOT about my ex-fiance. Which I'm sure was a result of viewing this movie.
And by the way, for the record, if any one ever made me that offer (if I had a wife) that Redford made Harrelson the answer would definitely be NO WAY!
