The Muppets In Oz: RPG (Summer 2005)
Please be sure to read the RPG Rules, Q&A here (http://forum.muppetcentral.com/showthread.php?t=15) before playing:
Remember, read ALL RULES before playing, read ALL PAGES to catch up in the game so you'll know where we are, and you CANNOT post for two characters, most especially a character which is already taken.
Addendum rules: No characters are left out of the game. If you are a late starter, please read ALL POSTS before playing to ensure you know where to jump into the game. Once you enter the game, you are treated as though you have been along for the whole story. If you must leave during the game and come back later, please read all posts from the time you left until you get back so as to know where we are in the game. The Muppets are just themselves, there is no Kermit as Scarecrow, etc. You must remain your character the entire time, you cannot change characters mid-game, and you cannot take someone else's character. This is the REAL Land of Oz, not a sequel to the movie. And remember, Game Host only will create new characters into the Narration to push the story along. Remember to let your Narrator (Game Host) lead you through the story, because you might otherwise push yourself into a dangerous position in the plot.
My Fozzie character posts will be in regular post. The Narration posts will be in green.
PLOT:
The Muppets will have to navigate the Land of Oz in order to obtain an “object” to release the Magic of Oz back into the realm. There is a deadline unknown to the players, and if that deadline is not met, Oz remains in shambles and the Muppets go home unscathed, but losers. An old nemesis of Oz will return in this story, but not yet…watch for the prehistory!
The Muppets have to figure out everything (regardless of the setbacks) and destroy the Eastern Witch before page 37 of this thread.
STORY:
Having gathered for rehearsals at The Muppet Theater shortly after their “Muppets Wizard of Oz” movie had shown on TV, our friends were hearing news of a terrible storm due to hit the city at any moment. Fearing the worst, the Muppets all hopped back into the Electric Mayhem’s bus and were headed home when it struck! There it was before them: A behemoth twister. Quickly, the bus was parked low thinking there would be enough safety there, the Muppets all watching and waiting.
The Muppets were hunkered down in the seats of the bus, the horrible winds began to blow all around outside! The roar of the twister got closer and closer, and they all held onto one another. Closing their eyes, they felt the bus lift first at one end, and then another. Up the bus flew into the air, spinning and whirling, causing one Muppet (we’re pretty sure who it was, but it was so noisy) to shout, “WHHEEEEEE!” Then, it seemed like the rising of the bus into the air had stopped, only to be followed by the gut-wrenching feeling of falling! The bus was obviously plummeting fast downward, spiraling it seemed.
A WOOSH! of wind blew under the bus slowing it down from its fall just enough that when it landed, it felt as though they had only fallen maybe 3 feet.
Standing up, the Muppets cheered that they were all okay, at least they hoped they were, and began to shake off the horrible occurrence. The windows were packed thick with mud as dust and rain from the twister had covered them. Walking toward the bus door, they expected to find the EM bus in shambles, only to find a familiar looking place that they had some how been to before, but not really. And, it was a place in shambles, a small city with small houses, wrecked.
No witches (yet, anyhow), no warlocks (yet, anyhow), and nobody else were there. What once looked to have been The Munchkin City now appeared to be a ghost town: gray and dismal.
The Muppets stepped off the bus and onto the dried, dead grass of Oz, and here is where our story begins.

It would appear to be some american-style ghost town. Except there are no cacti. Or tumbleweed. Or cowboys. Or taverns. So it would probably be more realistic to say it is nothing like an american-style ghost town. How intriguing

Rowlf: Well we can choose to follow the map there or make some other sort of plan. It's obvious that we're not in the Muppet Theater anymore so we've got to figure out how to get back.

Back to your regularly scheduled RPG:
======================================
Narrator takes the stand:
It seems, you see, that, before the Muppets were swept away from their homeland, something awful had happened. A greedy Munchkin discovered an old alchemy book in the dilapidated castle of the Wicked Witch of the East--who we all remember died and turned to dust when Dorothy Gale's house landed on her many years ago.
This Munchkin discovered a way to bring the Eastern Witch back to life, and actually collected all the grains of her dust from the spot in Munchkinland where she died--and put them all together again by stirring them in a pot of water, creating clay, and sculpting her form. With a magic spell he breathed upon her sculpture and, bursting from within the statue the evil Eastern Witch crawled out with her shrill, cackling laugh, turning upon the greedy Munchkin and destroying him.
Deciding to lay her wrath upon the citizens of Oz, she laid to waste as much as she could, destroying many of the residents of the country, even other witches, and causing many others to run and hide. Having been away for so long and not using her magic powers, they built up more and more powerful over the years in each grain of her dust, and now she had become the most powerful witch ever!!
She did create evil creatures to worship her and carry out her biddings, and she did swoop upon the Emerald City with her creatures and take over the Land of Oz.
Now, she resides within the Castle of Ozma in the Emerald City, where she does keep her prisoners and does now own all the magical talismans of Oz, and from there she exacts her rule over her slaves. However, she doesn't have a way to see what actually is going on in Oz, and has no idea that The Muppets have arrived...nor, do the Muppets realize that they are facing a perilous journey in their quest to get home---a journey they don't realize they'll even be taking.

;) : Have we figured out where we are yet.
See this post: http://forum.muppetcentral.com/showpost.php?p=275740&postcount=15
Who's Ricco? Suave? Who? Pepe? I'm lost! I'm LOST IN OZ!! AAH-AHHHHHH! Where's Frank when you need him?! AHHHHH! Something's in the bushes!
Out jumps a little Munchkin, whose little blue clothes are tattered and torn. He explains to the Muppets what has happened, and that the Eastern Witch has taken over the land and laid destruction to it all.
Munchkin: But, she can be destroyed! Her Great Book of Alchemy is her source of energy and life! It is suspended over a deep pit of fire, and many who have attempted to end her rule have fallen into that fiery pit. That being so, nobody else has attempted to stop her rule. They say it's held in place by a magic crystal somewhere in the palace gallery, but nobody knows which one as it, as everything, is green!
And then the Muppets realize what their quest is to be.
So, we go to Emerald City, ruin the book, dispose the witch, and somebody helps us get home? That's too HARD! *Clicks heels together* Um---nothing's happening! I guess you have to have on silver shoes or ruby slippers? I have a rubber chicken and a banana--will that work? *smashes them together a few times* No place like home! Nope. Still here. *Sigh*

05-24-2005, 09:20 AM
Hey, good idea Rowlf. Let's all go inside the bus where it's warm and taosty, and not creepy and drafty, and we can make up a plan to go out and get 'em.
Or we could just follow the map towards Emerald city...No sily idea. I don't know what popped it into my head.
;) : In the book, we followed this yellow road thing...no, stupid suggestion!
redBoobergurl
05-24-2005, 10:37 AM
The yellow brick road is not a bad idea, but everything is so dry and colorless I don't even know if we could find the yellow brick road. We could also try the map that Beauregard is talking about, it's not a silly idea, it's logical. Does someone actually have a map?

Fozzie Bear
05-24-2005, 02:25 PM
Hey, that little guy just ran under the bushes and across the field. Wonder why?
Okay, we have an option here. The Yellow Brick Road goes two ways, and since we don't really know anything about where we are we have to make a decision. One way DOES lead to the Emerald City, as the little Munchkin guy said, but the other way leads AWAY from here.
I know that in the books there is a map of the Land of Oz, but in the studies of the stories, it appears that the map MIGHT have been backwards, so that doesn't do us any good. We have nothing to really denote which direction to take from this point, gang.
From your Narrator:
In reality, there is a map in the books, but here's where you discover that it gets confusing:
(the original) http://www.eskimo.com/~tiktok/pics/map3.jpg
(this is the one I personally bought) http://www.eskimo.com/~tiktok/pics/map3.jpg
http://www.hungrytigerpress.com/tigertreats/ozmap1024x768.jpg (the one used modernly)
And one more: http://www.oz-central.com/graphic/p_map_02x.jpg
So even the Oz scholars are confused...however, the Narrator realizes which Map we are following, even though Fozzie Bear doesn't, and knows what the outcome is to be.
So, do we go left, or do we go right?
Beauregard
05-24-2005, 02:51 PM
Er, left. Right. Right, we go left. I mean, right. Left is right, right is...wrong?
I am confused. Start Again.

05-26-2005, 01:27 PM
The dust settles and before the Muppets there is a sign that reads: Deadly Desert. A little Munchkin appears from behind a tree.
Don't go there! Simply touching the desert sands will turn an individual into dust and you will become a part of the desert! And that's what's happened here! My family and friends, while trying to escape the Eastern Witch's wrath fled in this direction and a great wind caused by the Eastern Witch blew them all into the desert. They can be saved and brought back to normal, but the Eastern Witch MUST be destroyed! I do suppose, though, that by having turned to the right and ended up here you know which direction you need to go now to get to the Emerald City.
*Foz walks over to the little man*
Sorry, fellow, about your family and friends! Gee, if we can help, we sure will!
*To the Muppets*
So, back from where we came?
(Go back and look at the maps now, gang, and you will be able to see where you are in relation to where Dorothy's house fell (the site of the EM Bus in this story) and that by TURNING RIGHT and ending up at the Deadly Desert, you can figure which map the Narrator of this story is working from.)

note...keep commentary in the Q&A thread please. :)
The Narrator forgot to mention ONE IMPORTANT THING (because your friend the Foz isn't quite as bright as the real one...sorry): Originally, the Muppets had to figure out everything (regardless of the setbacks) and destroy the Eastern Witch before page 30 of this thread. We're now on page 7, so having forgotten the main rule here, the pages are extended to 37. In order for us to win the game, we must have the witch destroyed by page 37.

*walks towards the one house*
Fozzie Bear
05-27-2005, 11:03 AM
Then, to the one house we go! It's there, on the other side of this valley. We'll have to cross the bridge to get to it, too. And...um...lookit!
And it was, too--a bridge of Yellow Brick built across the valley. The valley was deep, and you could see a dirty little river flowing beneath it. Bats and buzzards flew out from under the bridge and over it, and a long tail stuck out from beneath the furthest end of the bridge. Is it attached to something? Is it alive or dead? We just don't know, yet...
And while I'm perfectly worried about this, Beau, I think you made a *gulp* good decision? Whatever there is in ONE house can't be nearly as bad as a bunch of them in a bunch of houses, right?
Beauregard
05-27-2005, 11:07 AM

Beauregard chose answer #1.
The Muppets while crossing the bridge had covered their eyes in order to keep the buzzards and bats from poking them out. Without knowing where they were exactly going, or seeing where they were going, their huddle is stopped short as they bumped into something, and it is followed by a booming, deep voice. Peeking out, they find the buzzards and bats have become hair on the head of a Giant.
YOU THERE! WHAT BUSINESS HAVE YOU IN CROSSING THIS BRIDGE?!

Without knowing the result of their trip with the Giant, the Muppets, fearful for their fates, ran back across the bridge and toward the little--but empty--Munchkin village. It had become a ghost town of sorts with everyone having left the village. The silence of the empty place was frightening, and the doors and shutters of the little houses opening and closing with creaks and groans in the hinges made it even more scary. The wind blew through the place and would moan, giving quite more the ghostly effect.
The Muppets WILL NOT like it here, your Narrator can guarantee that!!

Note: Cannot go to Giant, the decision to run away from him was already made. Currently the Muppets are in the deserted Munchkin Village.
Walking through the opening in the wall and having heard the creepy moaning and creaking of the winds and hinges on the doors, The Muppets realize that things in Oz were much worse than they imagined it could have been. They began to search for clues to find what might have happened here, though they had a pretty good idea, and notice that there are markings on two of the little houses.
Which house do they choose? 1 or 2?
Next post decides.

Fozzie Bear
06-01-2005, 09:31 AM
The Muppets gathered themselves up and took a deep breath and walked slowly toward the second little house. The markings along the side of it were those of claws and scrapes, and little Munchkin shoes and hats were along the walls of the inside, where they also found a paper stuck to the table, which read:
In these our final hours before the powerful Eastern Witch's armies subdue us, it is known that only the great Book of Magic from which the spells were derived to bring her back to life exists over a wide pit of fire within the walls of the Emerald City Palace. Once the book is destroyed, so will be the Witch. All those who were our leaders are kept captive within the walls of the palace and at their release a great battle will be had in which the Eastern Witch shall be overthrown and destroyed, bringing life back to Oz and its inhabitants who were pushed or thrown into the Deadly Desert. From here, the trip to the palace is many miles, and much danger exists along the way. However, there are some places with secret passages to underground tunnels which lead under Oz, tunnels created by the Nome King many years ago. Perhaps one such tunnel may be found and create a speedier trip to the Palace--or there could be dangers lurking within; but, power to the ones who can save Oz and it's inhabitants. It is now that the creatures of the Eastern Witch are attacking our village and...
So, The Muppets again knew what their path was to be in order to destroy the Eastern Witch, they discovered that there are underground tunnels hidden around Oz, but the question now was what happens now..?

The rustling outside the little Munchkin house stops right at the front door, and the Muppets hear the sniffing around the base of the door. Quickly, they move the table to the door and put it against it to barracade themselves inside, but doing so they move the carpet on the floor and SOMETHING is revealed (nobody notices this yet); however, someone points out that the window on the backside of the little house is big enough to run through and attempt to escape.

Alas! Nobody said there was a trap door!!
However, upon inspection, there beneath the carpet was a trap door...and it couldn't have been found at a better time for, as they cleared the door, Fozzie peeked outside through a sliver in the wall and saw...
HEY! THERE'S A DRAGON OUT YONDER ABOUT TO BLOW FIRE! RUN!!
And, with Rizzo throwing open the trap door, all the Muppets dove in and found themselves skidding across a smooth, slide-like floor of a tunnel--deeper and deeper they rode into the earth of Oz, seeing many other tunnel holes as down they went until...
PLOP!
They fell into an open cavern. All around them they saw the marks of scratches and claw marks of something that had been there many, many years ago. There was no inidication where they were, if they were even still near Oz...but, having been to a Fraggle Cave before they knew that this certainly was no Fraggle Cave, and there were no Fraggles nearby, either (which was their other indication).
1-Down one cave there was a light, reddish-yellow in color, shining from around the bend; 2-down another cave they heard rushing water; 3-and yet another cave was dark as night, but from which there was no light or sound. Which way do they go? Next post answers.
Keep in mind our friend the Giant, we were prejudiced against him even though in reality he would have been a huge help--so things in Oz MAY not be what they seem...or are they?

Okay! Onward to the water and to find our way to the Emerald City Palace!!
The Muppets began walking down the cave toward the running water and soon they found an underground river. There was little space beside it to walk, but what appeared to be a little boat carved from a tree floated near them and was tied to a rock. The river was deep enough that you couldn't really see the bottom, and it was still and quiet, but the water was flowing in one direction, so the Muppets hopped into the boat and began riding the underground river wherever it would take them.
This is nice! I like this. It's like the ride at the fair where you ride the boat through the little tunnel...except there, there's monsters and...stuff...and...you don't think anything will happen in this river do you?

Not really. The Muppets found the boat was picking up speed, and then noticed rapids along the sides of the boat.

Suddenly, the boat began to nearly fly down the top of the waters that the Muppets couldn't see more than a blur on the cave walls around them, until suddenly the sounds of water rushing stopped, and the boat skidded over the top of a still pool, and then slid up a dirt embankment and onto some underground earth. Once the boat finally stopped and the Muppets caught their breath, they realized that they had travelled a very far distance underground.
Now, in a new cave, they found 2 doors:
Left Door and Right Door
Which do they choose?
(Either door will let the Muppets know exactly where they are; but, the adventure will be different).

Having chosen and entered the left door, the Muppets found a carved stairway leading up and up and up...as a matter of fact, as they climbed the stairs they had to stop ever so often to rest, until finally they saw light from above! Seeing the light gave them renewed energy and they began to rush up the stairs until they ended up outside again as they exited a cave.
Here, they found lush greenery, and a bright blue sky.
WOW! Oz changed while we were under there!! Didn't think it was that long!
Suddenly, a fragile and weak looking Nome appeared before them from behind a rock.
Oh, no, you aren't in Oz anymore. That's Oz across the Deadly Desert there! You're now in the Land of Ev, above the Nome King's Dominions.
And indeed, the Muppets had gone underground through the tunnels the evil Nome King once dug in his attempt to destroy Oz, and were now in the lands outside the country. http://www.oz-central.com/graphic/p_oz_map_1.jpg
Looking across the desert they saw the Land of Oz http://www.oz-central.com/graphic/p_oz_map_2.jpg in all it's dirty, dead brown color with the grayest of skies over it.
Oh, no! How are we going to get back across the Deadly Desert?
The Nome stood forth and pointed, "There are 3 trunks there. In ONE of those trunks, there is a way across the Deadly Desert, and you can only have ONE choice. Choose wisely, because if you choose the wrong trunk, you may be stuck in the Land of Ev forever. Maybe."
Well, gang! Somebody else choose! I'm scared to do it.
(Plus, I know the narrator and it wouldn't be fair--wocka wocka!!)

*scratches head* i say let's check the trunks before we open them. My Mummy-dearest said, never talk to a trunk you don't know. Maybe look and see if they hold any further clues as to which to open...either that or just sit here forever.

*Attempts to open a trunk*
UNGH! It's locked tight!! Here...
*Bangs on lock with a rock, nothing happens.*
We can't open it anyhow. Do we just gotta CHOOSE one of these trunks and THEN it opens? Gee...trunk one, two, or three.
HEY!! But, look! There's sand around trunk one, red carpety material sticking out of trunk two, and nothing is around trunk three. Hmm...wonder which we would choose. Seems this was something that happened in "The Land Of Oz" book. Yep. I read that. There's a way across but I don't remember what it was...

Trunk number 2 rose into the air, and began to shake and rattle until suddenly the lock which sealed it broke and shattered into millions of fragments, and out popped a red carpet, about 3 feet wide and about 10 feet long.
Oh, well, that's not long enough to make it across the desert!! That desert is huge!!
The Nome began to tremble as he looked on, "You don't understand--things here are both magical and mystical! Lay it out on the ground and stand on it, and then begin to walk in the direction you desire to travel...and then you will see.
Sure enough, as the Muppets stepped on the red carpet, it began to grow in size necessary for all of them to stand upon it, and as they began walking, the carpet seemed to extend itself before them, while drawing up behind them. But, there came a rumble from under the ground.
Oh, began the little Nome, you better hurry, because the Nome King knows you are here, above his domains, and that you have escaped. He's coming to get you now!!
Does it work if we run?
Yes.
Ok then. RUN GANG!!!
And no sooner were the Muppets running on that magic carpet across the ground toward the desert than thousands upon thousands of Nomes began popping up from the ground. The little earth creatures hands would reach out and grab at the Muppets, but none caught hold, and the Muppets made a narrow escape from the stones and rocks being thrown at them.
Soon, they were on the desert and looking over into the sands of the desert they could see the faces of those who had come this way before and had fallen victim to the Deadly Desert's secret...touch the sands and you turn to dust.
Their worry came as, the closer they got to the Land of Oz, they began seeing the faces of those swept into the desert by the Eastern Witch's evil henchmen: they were unaware who the people faces were as they'd only ever seen illustrations in the books, but you couldn't mistake folks like Tik Tok, or The Soldier with the Green Whiskers. The hearts of the Muppets fell for these whose faces they saw in the sands, but it did not make them sad at all.
Instead, the Muppets were now more determined than ever! They knew that if they could thwart the Eastern Witch they would save those people from their prisons in the sands of the Deadly Desert!
And now, they arrived on the shores of Oz...the dried grass was breaking under their feet as they walked onto the ground and toward the dead trees. The trees were frail and limbs were falling off. They could see faces in the bark of the trees that were also dried up and dead. Dried 'pits' that used to be beautiful red apples now sat on the ground around the trees, and the Muppets were looking toward the east, as they were now in the Winkie Country, where the Wicked Witch of the West once lived, and how they knew it to be so was a sign which read, "Witch's Castle straight ahead--I'd turn back if I were you." (This Sign obviously sat along all roads leading to her castle.)
The decision was made to go to the castle first, as they should be able to find their way to the Emerald City from there since they knew Dorothy had once made that same trip from the Emerald City.
Well, I'm glad the weather's good for a walk. Dry, gray, and dingy, but good for a walk!

ha-ahhhh! YesSIR! It's our old friend Big Bird!!
Well, let's move on down the road, as they say!
*Whistles 'movin' right along'*
And so it was, their old friend Big Bird joined their trek and soon they had found the remainder of the Yellow Brick Road from the Winkie Country, and were headed southward toward the West Witch's castle.
Basically, the road was clear, although very dirty and the yellow tint was browning, like an old piece of paper. There were no obstacles along the way, either. The walk seemed just fine to them all.
Hey, Big Bird, did you know that this road is supposed to be yellow, like your feathers? Once we get to the Emerald City Palace, we're going to make things right again and make all the colors in Oz come back to where they are supposed to be. The mean ol' East Witch was brought back to life and she took things over!
They continued their walk, and nothing bad was happening.
(You may either await the story coninuation, or play with general banter here, story will resume 6/9/05).
Cooperation? That sounds great! (he lightens up and wipes his face). Say, it's so good to see you all again.

With Big Bird having found his teddy bear, Radar, the whole gang merrily went along their way toward the West Witch's castle and soon, the dark land of Oz became even darker, and before long found a road that led away from the Yellow Brick Road, and the sign that said, "Witch's Castle, Dead Ahead." It was in disrepair of course.
Well, we're already on the Yellow Brick Road, which we know goes to the Emerald City, which is where we want to go. Is there any need to go to the castle?
Next post decides: Go on to Emerald City of Oz, or make a detour into the West Witch's Castle?

06-09-2005, 02:07 PM
Well, Beau, I don't remember that the Munchkin ever said where the Southern Witch was. He just told us how to get rid of the Eastern Witch. But, the road does go south...
Having been the first one to speak up, Beauregard's suggestion of the direction to take was made, and so the Muppets ignored the castle after all and had decided on the trip toward the Emerald City.
But after many more miles, night had started to come, and so the Muppets found a cubby-hole in the side of a large rock that covered them well. When finally the night did come, and the Muppets were fading off to sleep, the darkness was thick and nothing could be seen anyways. Indeed, the once beautiful land of Oz was turned into a dark world of the Wicked Witch of the East.
But, sleep they did.

The Muppets slept well all that night, regardless how often the wind made the trees howl or whatever weird sounds they heard. The sun finally rose and the Muppets all began waking up and were soon back on their trek to the Emerald City Palace.
It wasn't long though that the trees, even without leaves, were so thick over them that they could no longer see the morning sun, and it got dark on them again, and finally they were stopped in the darkness when they heard sounds from both sides of the Yellow Brick Road.
On the left side, there was a thump, then a thud, and the thick grass was shifting and cracking; on the right side, there was a thud and a crackling, and then they heard the shifting of steps. Do the Muppets face the sounds from the left, or the sounds from the right?

The Muppets run through the woods behind the little Munchkin until finally they see the light of day peeking through the trees, and then find themselves running out into (what's left of) the sun (peeking through the clouds).
Yonder lies the Road of Yellow Brick, the Munchkin said. Hurry yourselves to it, and go steadfastedly toward the Emerald City Palace! Quickly! We fear something is at hand!!
The Munchkin disappeared into the woods again, and the sounds of the Kilidahs were heard along the edge of the woods.
Over the tops of the dead trees, a faint green color was in the sky, and the tops of the spirals of a castle were seen. It wouldn't be far now...yet, dangers lay ahead of the Muppets.
Well, gang! Movin' right along! :o

The Muppets have walked many miles, and soon begin approaching a new set of trees all set separately across the fields on side of the road. As they enter, the bricks begin to shuffle and move under their feet! While some of the Muppets can keep balance, others fall down.
