I don't know what they do with them, but I hope they are well taken care of. Precious cargo those are.

The deal with Disney and Sesame Workshop encludes the rights to the characters and productions but the actual puppets are still provided by the Jim Henson Creature Shop and Muppet Workshop. Henson still builds the puppets for Sesame; and Disney does not have a workshop creating the Muppets they use the same guys who have been doing it since day one, Henson. The Puppets in Wizard of Oz all were created and came from the folks at Henson.
The deal with Disney includes production and consulting agreements under which Henson will work with develop potential new programming featuring the Muppets for Disney. It also states that the physical Muppets used for productions would be created and maintained by the Henson shops. I would guess they are stored where they have always been. The Sesame Muppets are there too, except those kept on the set of the show (but they usally come back for tune ups and work during down times and are rotated around).
The deals have not caused the puppets to be taken from the performers nor the creators of the puppets. (Disney and Sesame may have a Kermit or Elmo stashed away on their property for easy access and for their use for promotion and events, but for the most part, the Muppets are where they always were.
Disney is still working with Henson to create, use, manage, perform, and produce The Muppets. This could change if Disney wants them seperated more, but right now having them where they are is the best for both parties (financially and physically). And it looks like Disney has no desire to take them away and on their own. Dr. Teeth, Bunson, Kermit, Crazy Harry, Rowlf, and all the others were not boxed up and shipped to a new location after the deal for new people to maintain, create, and work on. They are where they always were; just like the Sesame characters. Unless Disney or Sesame sets up a puppet workshop to maintain, build, and create their puppets; and they work out a deal with Henson, it looks like Henson will still be where the puppets are found when not working.
The Jim Henson Company still provides the characters used on Sesame Street and in the Muppet productions, but those characters, shows, and productions themselves are actually owned, run, and created by Sesame Workshop and The Muppet Holding Company.

I believe a lot of the old puppets are in the Jim Henson Legacy's archives. If I had to guess, I'd say that the newer ones are probably stored at the Charlie Chaplin Studios when they're not in use.
GelflingWaldo
11-29-2004, 01:27 PM
A few of the "old" puppets are in archives, but for the most part the puppets are recycled to make new ones or they just fall apart from age. There are not wearhouses upon wearhouses of perfectly compleated puppets. They are kept around the Henson shops for work and when needed are shipped out for use. Some of the more heavly used chacters (Kermit, Elmo, Piggy, Big Bird) have many copies and are found in many places for use by performers for special events and promotions. But for the most part they puppets are either on the set or in the shops.

When we saw them at Disneyland, they were being toted around in these awesome black cases. It was like... a big black box... really ancient looking... you just knew the holy grail was inside. The boxes were maybe 2 1/2 feet long, 8 inches wide, by 8 inches high with a handle on top. There were metal protector thingies on the corners, also painted black. The boxes looked like they'd been around forever and definitely held a treasure. I'd guess they're kept at the Studios when not in use. :shrugs:

It would be a shame if something were to damage them in trasport to a location, set, or event.

Numero uno... They make hundreds of these things, there's not just one of every character, espescially the big guns like GelflingWaldo pointed out. I read somewhere that in MIS they made and used SEVEN Kermits! So seeing as there is an actual Creature Shop on the Disney World premises, there are probably a few of the real Muppet puppets there (Location A).
Numero dos... dose? Ever read or see the book: "Jim Henson; The Works"? I used to think the puppets were elaborately displayed in bullet-proof glass cases with trip wire and lasers guarding them. But then I saw in said book, a picture of how they store the SS Muppets at their studio. They keep them loosley placed in (are you ready for this?) ... A FILING CABINET!!! There was Cookie, just hanging out of a filing cabinet drawer marked "Cookie Monster". Below him were some birds (puppet ones mind you) and a closed drawer that was marked "Vegetables". So, they are stored on location at the set of Sesame Street (Location B).
Numero tres... Finally, the people at Henson are wonderful people, honestly. I went to their website (www.henson.com) and found their contact info. I wrote and e-mailed them many times, saying "Love your work", "Keep up the legacy", "I have a suggestion", "What is Scooter" etc. etc. (okay, not the Scooter thing), and every time, they in some way, shape or form responded to me. Not always thorough answers and responses ("Thank you for the compliment", "We will always honor Jim's legacy", "Thank you for your suggestion, we'll consider it", "What the h*** do you mean 'what is Scooter?"), but a notable and kind effort. HOWEVER, I ask them about 'what's a guy gotta' do to get a real Muppet puppet'... no response (A guy can ask, can't he?) So what's the big secret? What magnificent mass of maniacal Muppet magic are men manifessting behind mosed moors, I mean; closed doors? I think the money pot is at the NY location on 627 Broadway (Location C).
Let's roll

That Rizzo is a real Muppet made by the Muppet Workshop for 'The Muppet Show ON TOUR'. They were made larger than the real thing.
Im quite sure that the classic Muppets are stored somewhere in England. Although that may have changed with the Disney deal and they may be more accesible in LA.
I know for sure that there are some puppets from The Muppet Show still in storage over here in the UK SOMEWHERE!

Check this out; This is where they keep Photos, scripts, posters, tapes and other stuff from the 'Live' Muppet productions:
http://www.cah.utexas.edu/findingaids/vee.html
Then right here at MC there is an interview with Jim Henson by Judy Harris where she asks him about where they keep the Muppets. The following is an excerpt from the last page pf the interview (http://www.muppetcentral.com/articles/interviews/jim4.shtml):
In 1978 there were over 500 Muppets, so there must easily be many more by now. Do you have any idea how many Muppets there are?
HENSON: You know, I don't really know. I couldn't begin to guess actually.
When they're not being used, are they all in your various buildings on 69th Street - is that where they're housed?
HENSON: No, we have a lot of storage - we have theatrical storage in New York because we built up - they're quite bulky, you know, particularly the large characters, and so we couldn't begin to store all the stuff in our place.
So how do you keep track of them? Is there some one place where they're all inventoried?
HENSON: Yeah, yeah, we have boxes and they're all carefully labeled and that sort of thing, and we do go back and pull them out for other shows.

Roger that, Operation Green Felt is a go! Posing as an landscaping Astro-turf firm. Affirmative, Over and out.

Wait, it's over?
Over... Oh, the stupid military talk I came up with. Alright gang, the 3 of us need to convince the rest of the members to get back on track here. There's strength in numbers, if we all joined forces, we could tackle the whole empire and take whatever we want, so come up with a new plan Uncle Deadly, or no series one figures for you!!!
Just kidding :)

don't you know it's better to get your OWN puppets and create your OWN charactures then to hold another puppet in your hands that is someone elses characture? ;) There is nothing cool about having a muppet puppet... that's just constricting cause it forces you to BE that muppet.. and that muppet isn't in you. So it just doesn't work.

Count! Just who we need to count the perfect time for the thifery (is that a word) to take place.
When do you think?
The Count
01-05-2005, 06:51 AM
Na, the word youz want is "thievery". Well, the plan can't be at high noon, they'll be expecting that. Midnight might be nice, but a bit cliche. How's about 5 o'clock PM? That's the purrrfect time, everybody gets off work, they leave the workshop, they wouldn't suspect some folks staying behind to lock up and then steal a few of their merchandise. Besides, I got a special alarm clock that opens up a portal to the Shadow Realm at that time. We can get in early in the morning, chill with our homies there, and when the portal opens up again, that's when we make our move. Sound like a plan?

Sounds like a plan. So, do we just saunter down there, and ask for coffee to gain original access? Or what?
Perhaps we could lean on the doorbell the way that Steve Whitmere did when he first arrived...
Maybe Christy is here, but not answer our questians cause she's pretending not to recognise us. Yo, Christy. You can recognise us now.
The Count
01-05-2005, 09:04 AM
You mean Bat-5 Vic. You know, like the song from SS?
Anyway, Christy's around, she just has some work to tend to. She's workin' on already infiltrating the workshop and gettin' things ready for the raid. You know, she's get chummy with the guy who has the keys to the safe where the puppets are stored, learning the schedules of the people who open up the vault, when to go in and act like nothin's outta order, that kind of stuff.
Vic Romano
01-05-2005, 10:16 AM

I can only take you as far as the lo-bby
The Count
01-05-2005, 12:59 PM
Hey! Wait for me!

OK then, you take the whell UD, we'll get there that much faster.
Beauregard

Hye, that's not nicey, nicey...
Vic Romano
01-05-2005, 01:05 PM
You're gonna' let UD drive!?! Not that he doesn't have my trust or anything, but don't you think we might draw attention to ourselves by letting such a young kid drive?
*notices the brightly painted bus we're all riding in"
Er, nevermind about the "drawing attention" thing... drive on UD.
Beauregard
01-05-2005, 01:08 PM

01-05-2005, 01:15 PM
I thought you said, "Drive on UD..."
Sorry.
Vic Romano
01-05-2005, 01:17 PM
LOL!!! I did didn't I! Ha ha! Sorry old pal, you okay Uncle Deadly? Uhh... Uncle Deadly?
The Count
01-05-2005, 01:18 PM
Sorry 'bout that youz guys, didn't know about UD's age. So... since UD can't drive cause of his age, and I don't have a license due to my blind batty eyes, and Christy's already at the workshop... Hmm, if Bo can only take us as far as the low-bby... Then we'll have to depend on Vic driving us there, unless we change the bus for cash for plane tickets and have them drop us above the workshop. Then again, we could gather back at my bat-cave and have a few monsters dig up a tunnel straight to the workshop. What do you think guys, has it been done before?
Vic Romano
01-05-2005, 01:20 PM
Yeah yeah! A tunnel! Then I'll drive the bus through the tunnel! Just scoop up UD and make sure he's not flattened too badly.
Beauregard
01-05-2005, 01:37 PM
It's ok. He's jus tire-d.
Uncle deadly
01-05-2005, 01:47 PM
Oh boy, my head, where am I again who ar you guys???
are you a vampire???
uuggghh...
The Count
01-05-2005, 04:16 PM
Don't worry UD, you're among friends. Yeah, guess I'm a vampire, at least when I want to be one I am.
C'mon we gotsa get the Frackles started on that tunnel to get us to the workshop. Heck, might even get some Doozers in on the job too.
christyb
01-05-2005, 05:26 PM
hi. guys. Sorry I've been absent so long. So can someone give me a quick update?
The Count
01-05-2005, 05:44 PM
Hey yourself tuts. The Count here, just joined this little scheme youz got going. Anyway, here's the plan how it stacks up, though not as nicely as...
Oh yeah, the plan.
OK, Beauregard and Vic Romano are driving the EM bus en route to my secret bat-cave. Uncle Deadly and me, along with some Frackles I got as hired muscle are digging a tunnel straight to the workshop. You're gonna be the inside gal, getting all the knowhow we need to pull off this caper. And don't try sneakin' in any whoopie cushions, Animal ate them all.
So that's the plan. So, just get everything ready, cause we're a-comin' to get those Muppets freed.
christyb
01-05-2005, 05:49 PM
Hmmm...Ok great. Well It looks like I'm headed to NYC. I'll be posting what I find out. (BTW: For anyone just reading this thing. I'm making this up. I don't know any of the muppet people, and I'm not in NYC. My backside is currently sitting in Stevensville, Montana Library. This is just for fun and completely fictional.) (sorry had to get that out of my system.) I'll drop of a resume and hope to get a job. If not well. I'm sure that there's some lonely security guard who needs a date right??? ;)
Beauregard
01-06-2005, 12:26 PM
Right.
Oh wait, I'm not a security guard, am I. Do you only date security guards?
*sees everyone staring*
Oh, sorry. I'll just get back to driving then.

OK then, synchronizing watches to the tunnel's opening.
Beauregard
01-07-2005, 07:58 AM
Synchronized swiming at quater past ten this morning...oh wait! Sorry. My mistake again.
The Count
01-07-2005, 08:51 AM
S'okay Bo. After all, don't think the guys will mind if we take a quick detour to watch those bathing beauties from Charkie's.
And we all know you gotsta get your water thread fix. Heh heh, just ribbing you Bo.
OK, so the raid's set for this afternoon, they'll never see it comin'.
Uncle deadly
01-07-2005, 09:28 AM
huh?
whats the password??
Beauregard
01-07-2005, 10:26 AM
I dunno.
Right, sychronize our pace makers...no watches...wait, what what?
Vic Romano
01-07-2005, 11:21 AM
Ack! My pace maker stopped!!!
The Count
01-07-2005, 11:26 AM
Your maker of Pace stopped? Here Vic, you can borrow mine, it makes the greatest picante sauce, with smoky garlic and jalapeño pepper bits in it.
The password... Well, just go back and watch Follow That Bird!, and keep your ears alert for Kermit's report of the bird on the run.
Uncle deadly
01-07-2005, 11:29 AM
I dont have Follow that Bird!!!
Vic Romano
01-07-2005, 12:11 PM
I'll just make peace with my picante sauce.
Beauregard
01-08-2005, 05:16 AM
No, I don't have it either.
But does it have something to do with crossing the road?
The Count
01-08-2005, 05:48 AM
OK then, looks like I'll have to spell it out for youz knuckleheads. See, the story of Follow That Bird! is that Miss Finch thinks Big Bird is unhappy on Sesame Street cause he ain't living with a family of birds. She gets him relocated to the Dodo Family's home out near Chicago, actually Oceanview in Illinois. The straw that broke the camel's back was when the Dodos didn't allow Snuffy to come and visit cause he wasn't a boid. Big B then goes on the lamb, he ducks out, he flies the coop, he leaves that scene behind. Kermit then does his reporter bit from the Dodo's home while everyone back at Sesame's watching the news. After Chevy Chase introduces da' frog, we cut to the scene of the crime. And there's Kermit standing thinkin' he's off camera and says the bit that Bo's got in his sigline.
Kermit: "So why did the chicken not cross the road? Cause it was chicken. Get it? Oh! Hi-Ho, Kermit the Frog here!"
And then it goes off from there. Sos are we all clear on the password now? Ah forget it, come over to my place, we're havin' rottisserie chicken for lunch with a side of corn fritters and bat's claw cole slaw.
Uncle deadly
01-08-2005, 06:53 AM
cool!
Beauregard
01-08-2005, 07:38 AM
Chicken!
Uncle deadly
01-08-2005, 09:52 AM
The password is chicken everyone!
Vic Romano
01-08-2005, 02:18 PM
The password is "chicken everyone"?
Uncle deadly
01-08-2005, 03:51 PM
I was confirming it...
Beauregard
01-10-2005, 02:14 PM
Now everyone knows the password, we'll have to think of one know one will know. Hmm. How about: One of us says "We just have to catch them red-handed" and the other responds with the correct line. Yeah? Because hardly anyone knows what to repond to that, right? So we'll know you are genuine stock.
Perfect. So, no one give it away until necessary.

christyb
01-25-2005, 03:44 PM
Unless you want to get me caught no. But you could yell if you aren't too near the warehouse. Me I'm gonna amuse my self.
*picks up a Kermit and begins playing.
Too bad I can't do Kermit's voice

Yep got the PM. I faintly remember having a book too. (wonder whatever happened to that thing.) Thanks for the info.
Back to topic...
We all claimed muppets early on but here goes again...
I get a Gonzo, Kermit dressed as he is in MCC, and an Animal.
*runs sneaks grabbs the appropriate puppets and jots back to hiding spot.
I knew there was an advantage to being stuck in here. Hurry up guys there's plenty for everyone!
Vic Romano

Are there any extra Kermits? Maybe a Sweetums? Rowlf? Beeker? Statler & Waldorf? I don't know who claimed what, but I'm not leaving with nothin' but the Avacado!

Yeah the bigger (full-body) puppets are stacked around my current location. But this place is file cabinet heaven. I mean they're stacked sky high. Older puppets are towards the top so you use the ladder that's here to reach them. Seems there's multiple's of every core character depending on costume and hair, etc. However, there are a few Muppet babies puppets in here and those are rare indeed.
*looks down at puppets in lap and then at the warehouse.
Why do I feel like a kid in a candy store???

I'm guessing the Disney company or Hensons son has them

Back to the story at hand.....
*hangs up cell phone on Vic. Looks down at current collection. Runs madly about warehouse (i.e. File Cabinet heaven).
*Smiles at new collection.
Side note:
Now sitting with me are... Kermit in his costume for Muppet Christmas Carol (top hat, cane, everything), Gonzo dressed in his main outfit for Muppet Treasure Island, Animal in his outfit from the same movie as Gonzo, Uncle Traveling Matt from Fraggle Rock, and Pepe the King Prawn in his ballet tutu from Muppets from Space.
Me: (talking to myself): Now all I gotta do is wait for the gang.

*Calls christb back*
Yeah, we're on our way too... I think. Do you know Monkey style Kung-Fu if the guards try and stop you or find out where you're hiding?
christyb

*Picks up
No....but no worry. I heard the guards talking. They're at a party tonight. I distinctly remember hearing one of them say "Who'd wanna steal this junk?" Besides being terribly offended I couldn't believe out luck. Besides you can't see me. I've sunk back and there's a small spot for me to lie down with my new buddies on top. So I'm hidden by Big Bird and Snuffy along with Sweetums. And I'm lying comfortably on some miscellaneous full-body puppets.

That's what I was getting at. (it's amazing how you can hear me off of Vic's cell phone). You can have whatever you want. Right now I'm just amusing myself till ya'll get here.
*thinks for a moment*
Hey how will I know it's you guys and not the guards returning from the party???
Vic Romano
01-26-2005, 01:08 PM
We'll be wearing "not guard" uniforms.
christyb
01-26-2005, 01:10 PM
