Role Play Games (RPG) is a fun pastime at Muppet Central, however there have been many questions raised in the past about how the games are to be played as well as how the games are performed.

This thread is created to serve as a place to get the official rules of RPGs within this community, as well as post Questions & Answers. This will stop the unnecessary number of posts for such topics and put us all on the same page as far as creating and performing in successful RPGs. It will also delete the unnecessary posting of discussion or Q&A within the games themselves.

We’ve had a few successful—and many unsuccessful—RPGs and this thread will also hopefully serve as a training tool to those who wish to become Game Hosts, and to those who wish to participate and perform in the game.

Please read all these rules prior to posting a new game, or performing in them (it doesn't take as long as it seems it will take to read all these rules).

As with all rules or guidelines, nobody will be shot for not participating 100% to code with these rules. Why? RPGs are for fun, and this is mainly just to maintain a decent structure to the game.

Game Master Rules

The Game Master (hereafter called the Game Host) is the most important person of the RPG, as without the Game Host there is no RPG.

1. To become Game Host (GH) you must first pre-determine the game’s story before starting the game. There must be an underlying plot to the game so you’ll be able to tell the actors of the game what their next step is.

2. Create particular predicaments and situations for the performers to deal with. They are subject to your disposal at this point. Those who perform are only allowed to go as far as the Game Host allows them to go in the story. They should have obstacles to overcome, and be given ‘points’ upon completion of those obstacles (ie, the prize being more energy or weapons/tools).

3. Only after the performers overcome that level/predicament given, then you will provide them with the continuation of the story.

4. Try to keep the story as realistic as prior Muppet productions.

5. If the GH wishes to perform in the game (as I have in the past) then you will want to be a member of the chorus—someone not so recognized up front. You will be in the story but you cannot give the answers (hints are okay) as to how the other players can overcome the obstacles you set forth for them in the game’s story. (As I played along, before participating to defeat the bad-guy, I only ever did it when suggested to do so by another player.)

6. If you begin a game, you absolutely MUST maintain the game and continue to run it, unless you turn it over to someone else to be the Game Host. If you cannot complete the game, then DO NOT start the game. Abandoned games clog up the Games Forum.

7. Your first post in the game should be the storyline, plot synopsis; not rules, not cast you expect to play. The plot synopsis is a one-paragraph statement that tells the tale about what the performers are going into. Do not just start a game and let the performers run wild in the games. This is BAD! You must have a story plot for it to be a RPG, and you must be giving them obstacles to overcome.

8. You can create a minor chorus character during the game to help the plot along, but you cannot remain that character. As the GH, you are also narrator and can suggest what the sideline characters do, but you cannot dictate the actions of the performers. These cameo-characters are there to pass along information and create plot twists but CANNOT be a character that someone might want to perform later in the game (ie, not a Muppet character).

9. It is preferred that RPGs are Muppet based, with JHC/Creature Shop “other” characters, as well as SS characters, invited to play along in the story.

10. Suggested settings can begin at any location, including (but not limited to) the Muppet Show Theater, The Muppet Boarding House (from Muppets from Space), Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, The Labyrinth, and any other location considered Muppet-based (or Henson based).

11. More info on structuring the RPG is below, however, to make sure it’s noted here, create your thread titles beginning with “RPG,” so (for example) you will see in the forums: RPG: The Muppets Take Manhattan.

12. You will never denote which characters are in the game or create a cast. This way, whoever wants to play can jump in at any time—in other words, you nor other performers in the game will speak to Janice until someone comes in to play Janice, but everyone will assume that the character is/was there all along.

13. There should only be one RPG at a time. You can (and should) post a link to the game in this thread. At the game’s end you can ask that it be locked, or leave it open.

14. Do not drag some scenes out too long, or else the game becomes boring and you’ll lose performers.

NOTE: Wherein RPG’s are considered, if you want to create the RPG you are the Game Host. RPGs run Monday through Friday, with a break on the weekend. I expect that RPG Game Hosts should post at least once daily to lead the characters in the story along their challenges. If said Game Host does NOT participate and continue the story I will not accept ANY game suggestions thereafter from that member.


RPG Performers

These are those folks who participate in the game.

1. Performers cannot change the direction of the story that the Game Host has set forth. Only the GH can create plot twists. Remember, you are subject to the Game Host’s whim when you take on the role of RPG performer. The GH is your director!

2. It is suggested (but not necessary) that if you have the screenname of a particular character that you also get a matching avatar (screenname Fozzie Bear, thus has a Fozzie avatar) and be that character in the game. If not, then the avatar will serve as the character you are performing. This will save confusion on what role you are playing.

(If you do NOT have a character name as a screenname, then you are open to playing whatever role you wish to play (preferably Muppet, SS, or JHC related). This can be a clear photo, art, or your fan art of the character you are performing. If you have no avatar, someone will gladly help you get one.) 3. Once you begin performing in an RPG as one character, you will remain that character for the duration of the game. You cannot change from adult version of Rowlf the Dog to become Baby Rowlf. You absolutely cannot play two different characters at the same time; each performer is only allowed to use one character in the game. You can only perform as your character; you cannot create action or dialogue for someone else’s character (however, in order to push the story along the GH can create and use a cameo character). You must also remain true to the personality and integrity of that character. Characters are on a first-come-first-served basis, so when the game begins, you should jump in quick—there cannot be 2 Kermits or 2 of any characters (and definitely not a Muppet character with a Muppet Baby Version of that character in the same game).

4. On maintaining personalities, there are some items that need to be touched on. Some characters have limited dialogue, if any at all, such as Crazy Harry or Camilla the Chicken. In an RPG it’s imperative that the characters talk at some point, so you can, for example, be Camilla and speak saying “*Bawwwk-Cluck* I love Gonzo! *Cluck.*” In the RPGs, she can talk.

5. If you are playing in the game, you should have read the first post to understand what the plot of the story is; if you are joining late, be SURE to read the entire game (at least scan it) to catch up to the point where the game is currently. When you come back to the game to play, you should scan back to your last post and read everything after that to catch up on the story and action of the game. Don’t just pick up from your last post as more may have happened in the game since then.

6. The RPG will NOT be the place to form opinions regarding religion, creeds, sex, politics, or any other topic that would NOT be within the personality/integrity of the characters in the game. Go to a different folder to create a different thread for those conversations. Likewise, post all questions regarding the RPGs—or other comments about the game—in this particular thread.

Hi, gang! Today (1/31/2016) marks the beginning of the new role play. I'll be game host of the game. The rules for the game are already set forth on page one of the thread below.

The Story should be told in bold italics. This will be the Narration of the Game Host, and the Narrator’s text.

Dawn rises over the Muppet Boarding house. It is Friday. The show is on break for a while, however some business still has to be done at the theater, work at the house, and other such chores.

Perched on the roof of the house, Camilla breaks into morning squawks just as the alarm clocks begin to ring.

One fuzzy, brown hand reaches out and slaps the banana colored clock into off position, stretches, scratches his furry belly, then rises from his slumber.*

Responses and actions should be in regular type, actions surrounded by an asterisk.

*Grabs the remote from the coffee table and begins flipping the channels.*
Let's see what's happening in our world today.
*stops on a cartoon channel*
There we go.

Ammendments to these rules may be forthcoming. If there are any distinguishable rules for the particular role-play at hand, they will be listed in the beginning of that role-play.

This thread will be the permanent rules and questions/answers thread for all role-plays so the role-plays will be free of that information and for role-play only. We will not do any role-playing within this thread.

I've missed several good ol' RPG characters.

I've thrown into the Muppets on the Move the climax I was working on before. It's (as usual) had to change from the original version because I was out sick and the vehicles bypassed where I was going to have a stand-off. But, I think it's going to work better this way anyhow! Nothing like a kidnapping to get things off the road. Or on it. Or...you know. Beth, hope you don't mind it. I think the return of two people (and not likely who most are going to think they are) will make for a great TWIST ENDING!!

So far, we've managed to go from being frightened by a giant something in the woods to taking a nap. If there is someone who wishes to create a plot to drive the game through a story, please feel free to do so--but, you'll need to make sure your plot is well thought out and that you can stick with the game throughout it's entirety.

We can only have one Game Host in this case, and if no responses are given then I'll jump in.

I'd prefer someone who has played in these games for a long time to do the Game Host role, and keep in mind that you then become a very VERY secondary character, and you can't play the game as anything other than a secondary performer--in other words, you do not get to give away the plot, but everyone has to figure it out.

Ok I have a new Role Play Story. Does anyone want to hear about it?

Ok here I go.

The whole plot is going to be a Toy Story kind of story. Its about me moving from our old house. The whole plot is getting some characters toys or figures of all kinds range of Muppets, Disney and Comic stirps characters trying to get to the new house from getting left behind or not wanting to leave.

Fozzie could you look over this and let me know if I can be Game Master of some kind for this Role Play?

We need more plot in the story. Think it through deeper.

As a Game Host you'll have to know the story from beginning to end and must be able to apply story telling/narration every day for the duration of the game. You don't want to just start the story and not have a definite beginning, middle, and end; if it runs loose, then folks will get bored with it and it's not fun anymore. You'll also need to be able to leave open-ended posts so the next person will be able to act on the previous post.

Think it through a little more as if you are about to write a story and then let me know via PM when you're ready to try it out. It takes a lot of work and time to do a good role play, which is why I don't do them too often anymore, because time and responsibility.

Keep in mind that you'll need to change your avatars to match the character you are playing. That keeps the game from being confused as to which character is posting. Also, you don't want to use the same avatar someone else is currently using.

Prawn Cracker, you can get in an RPG at any time. They're meant to be character-non-exclusive so any Muppet can join whenever. Just be sure you read the whole game so you're up to par on the events and what direction the game is taking when you join.

Daffyfan, I hope that you won't play any other character besides Floyd. He is one of my favorites, and I think others will agree with me when I say that it is because we don't see that much of him, that his presence in these games is so appreciated. Besides, since I don't know your real name, I just call you Floyd in my mind.

There's been two RPGs that I felt like the movie I loved had ended, and that was Muppets and the Stone Eye and the first one we did (or that I did) where the Muppets are trying to figure out who's sabotaging their show, only to find out it was the Haffa Brothers from EM.TV (right after they bought JHC) (Statler and Waldorf got blamed at first).

If you all want me to try it, I will...but, I cannot promise time will let me. I'll need someone to be on stand by to take over if I cannot do it. Since Beau has got warm reception after the last one, maybe he can be on hand?

Keep in mind that we don't exclude characters from the games (hence, no "cast list" in the beginning) so if Miss Piggy isn't there for a few days we'll just assume she is and we'll keep on playing, when you get back to the game, just read everything and catch up, and jump right in.

It isn't a necessity to know all about Oz to play the RPG.

I'll go ahead and release the title and a quick specific about the game:
RPG: Muppets In Oz--the Muppets go there, but a new twist: No Scarecrow or Dorothy, etc. The Muppets play themselves, not other characters. I think it'll be fun.

I was whining because it seems that folks hop right into a game or something without reading the rules or history or even knowing what to do. The rules are there because it helps people play the game smoothly without stepping over boundaries. Seems folks just jump into the mix without reading the story or something.

Anyhow, I posted ANOTHER "Please Read" in the game. I hate doing that. Slows things down. It also pushes us closer to page 37 at which time the game is over, so my suggestion would be to post as little as possible for unnecessary stuff (like the 2 fozzies all of a sudden, let's just respond with links to this Q&A thread and the first post in the game.) I think that'll save us some confusion and not slow the game down.

One of the things I said was that there would be no characters from the book appear, but I suppose I was wrong. Munchkins would be there somewhere to help discover things and warnings, but I think I'm going to pull a few more from the books as well to push the plot along. However, no Scarecrow, Tin Man, or Lion, Dorothy, or Ozma of Oz. You'll see why.

AND DON'T FORGET THAT WE DON'T PLAY ON WEEKENDS!

There were only 2 options: Ghost Village or Bridge. The decision was made to retreat, so the second option is being used now in the story.

I was thinking about this today and I think I won't ever tell what COULD have happened and here is why:

I like the idea of torturing the players wondering if they made the right decisions! MWA HA HA HA!!! :)

That, plus if I want to use the other options later that nobody chose then I can!

As for now, though, the Giant won't be returning. Though he sounded like there were monstrous intentions, he was really a sweet giant and was going to feed the Muppets and explain to them how best to get to Oz (tunnel) which was nearby (won't say where because it won't help now anyhow, but there was something under the bridge that blocked that tunnel).

Anyways, we'll move on into the story.

{FYI: Further back in the caves, had you chosen the darkest cave of all, there was a ladder which led straight up into the lower levels of The Emerald City Palace; and had you chosen the RIGHT DOOR earlier, you would have gone deeper into the caves of the Nome King's Dominions, faced him, and been likely either destroyed or imprisoned, ending the game...good choice going Left!}

Now, let's hope the correct trunk gets picked. There may have been a hint which trunk to use: Did I say ONE those two times because it's the first trunk, or did I say ONE twice because it's number 2? OR! Did I say one, so you might think "2" and know to pick "3"??

BTW: I'm going out of town tonight through Sunday night. I'm going to put a pause in the story this afternoon and we will resume on Monday. The further adventures are expected to be more exciting because with Beau's decision to push forward, you're going to get nearer to the Emerald City Palace...and obviously you're going to be seeing some new obstacles.

Please do not deter the plot or continue in a direction not narrated by the game host (these are plot driven stories in the RPGs). Remember that the game ends at page 37, so you'll want to minimize any banter the Muppets might have with one another.

MrsPepper: The way the RPG's are played at MC being different than other places may be because of the way I designed them for this forum. I started them back right after JHC was sold to EM.TV, and with no knowledge of Dungeons and Dragons kind of RPG, I just came up with some rules that we've played under ever since, and they seem to be working.

Obviously, though, each game-master plays differently than me, but the base rules are always intact. And they work, so we've kept 'em.

Still interested to see what it is that folks do with RPGs at other boards, though; so post away!! :)

Well first off, you guys have alot more rules. It's extremely organised, like someone in this thread was talking about having alternate choices, and stuff. Like a choose-your-own-adventure book, everything being planned out. Most of ours would have a major theme, but any member could really direct it (of course, as long as you didn't control any other players, or god-mod or anything). And the type of forum is different, too. You have a games master for the roleplay, that kind of stuff.
Maybe what i've done (which is't exactly a whole lot, mind you) is kind of juvenile compared to this. I've been in a few role-plays for the Redwall series of books, if you've read them. But typically the fans of those books are alot younger than people here, between 9 and 14, typically. So it makes it alot harder to do anything really organised, like this. Then again, I didn't do a whole lot of role-playing, as I helped run activities and didn't always take part in discussions.
Hee, that makes me remember. We used the term "god-moding" or something like that if you were just defeating enemies all the time and didn't actually have a fight. You can't be all-powerful and stuff. We also had the term Mary-sue, I don't know if it's used all over, but in Redwall, it was the typical "I'm an orphan, my parents were killed by vermin, I have sworn revenge, etc" and it used to drive all the leaders CRAZY! :)

So I guess I get to re-learn all this kind of stuff, eh? ;)

Edit: Oh Fozzie, no, these rules seem to work really well. Just a little intimidating to people like me, who haven't done it this way before, and all that. :o

I have joined the thread as "The Headliner" the alter ego of the Muppet Newsman.

His special powers are the ability to appear from nowhere as if he has suddenly been switched on to read a news flash; the ability to make random objects fall from the sky by readng a topical news story about them and having a constant stream of information from around the world being feed to him through his ear piece (which is like a hair piece only slightly lower.)

Not a super power, but he also has a skill of being able to keep people in suspence. More at eleven...

Well, excuse me for having a busy life! I'm sorry that I didn't let you know when YOU ALL were good and ready but I don't have the satisfaction of posting every trillisecond of the day like most of you. Why don't you all just fess up to the fact that this was MY idea and then the world will be a better place. Granted, maybe "Game Master" was too much to ask; all I really want is a simple acknowledgement as to who suggested this game.

Sorry for the rant; I'll think about playing this game as a "common contestant".

Sorry about that, but I asked and didn't know what to do. Other folks were interested in the game, so I went ahead and started it. I hope you won't be too sore at me (or anyone else) and will come in the game and play along anyways. The more the merrier! :) Besides, you don't want to let a good game idea go to waste, do you? C'mon in and play.

And I'm sure folks don't intend for you to always be in the threads every second of the day. However, in order to be a Game Master you have to be available every day (weekends excluded) to continue the story. Just a reminder there.

Hope you'll forgive and forget, and come in and play the game. Seems like it'll be fun!

This may sound like a strange request, but I was wondering if anyone wants to take over as Rowlf in Big Brother. The only reason I'm asking is that I'm leaving for a trip on Sunday and won't be able to play him next week and he's still in the house and not up for eviction. I just figure it's not an easy game to just drop out of. County, Count! I do like your superb idea of Lefty the Salesman being the one indicated by those clues, very clever. But, as I say, it was also Lex Luthor as decided by the game master. Also, heading to the convention makes us leave Muptropolis. So, while a good idea, not neceserraly going to help the story along. So can we, um, can back to direction of de game a little? We need to find Lex/Lefty and/or figure out why he took the ADD device.

I've tried to put Lefty to sleep before he ran too far away, but is it up to me to decide if he did fall asleep? Right now, I've left it open ended and just asked if anyone could tell if he's fallen asleep, cause I wasn't sure.

Yes, usually you can tell what you've done to the villian, and, if nec I'll give the villian a loop-hole to jump through if he must escape.
